Majors Take Down #10 LaGrange 7-5

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps College baseball team won their third consecutive game on Friday as the Majors took down #10 LaGrange College 7-5 at Twenty Field. The win improves the Millsaps record to 3-2 on the season. LaGrange falls to 5-4.

The Panthers scored a pair of runs early in the top of the 1st to grab a 2-0 lead. Fortunately, John Wiltshire was able to limit the damage on the mound as he stranded two LaGrange runners to end the inning.

The Majors got on the board in the bottom of the 2nd when Cavan Breland singled to score Jimmy Johnstone who had reached on a triple to left field.

Wiltshire was able to settle in on the mound, and Millsaps plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 3-2 lead. Wes Lassere notched an infield single that the Panther third baseman made a throwing error on. Chase Callaway and Brennan Ducote both scored on the play to give the Majors the advantage.

When LaGrange answered with a RBI single in the top of the 4th, Ductoe had the response for the Majors in the bottom half of the inning. He launched a towering shot over the left field fence for his first homerun of the year to bring the score to 4-3. Millsaps was able to steal a run later in the inning when Callway was caught in run down between first and second. He was eventually tagged out, but not before Connor Woodall was able to score from third and make it 5-3 Majors after four full innings.

The Panthers answered right back in the top of the 5th with a RBI single, and again in the 6th with an unearned run to even things up at 5-5.

In the middle innings the two squads really settled in to a pitching duel. Conner Haynes was called on out of the bullpen, and turned in a magnificent outing for the Majors. His final line showed 3.1 innings pitched, no hits allowed, just one walk and three strikeouts.

Millsaps finally broke through for the final time in the bottom of the 8th inning. The Majors loaded the bases thanks to an error, and two perfectly placed bunt singles. After LaGrange went to the bullpen for a new arm, Johnstone scored on a wild pitch. Woodall provided an insurance run with a RBI single to make it 7-5.

Haynes pitched a perfect top of the 9th inning to nail down his second win of the 2018 season.

Next up for Millsaps is a pair of games on Sunday, both at Twenty Field. The Majors will take on North Park University at 11:00am and Fontbonne University at 2:00pm.
