JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps College baseball team took to Twenty Field for a pair of games on Sunday afternoon. In the first game against North Park University the Majors came back from a 4-1 deficit and won 7-6 in extra innings. In game number two the Millsaps offense put up 10 runs on 13 hits to beat Fontbonne University 10-0.
Game 1 vs. North Park
Senior
Jacob Mardick got the call on the mound for Millsaps, and he had the Viking bats shutdown for the first three innings. Unfortunately, North Park broke through and scored a pair of runs on triple in the top of the 4
th to take a 2-0 lead.
The Majors answered back in the bottom of the half as they loaded the bases and
Cavan Breland was hit by a pitch that allowed
Wes Lassere to score.
Unfortunately, the Vikings scored a run in the 6
th and another run in the 7
th to go ahead 4-1.
In the bottom of the 7
th inning Millsaps really fought back.
Mason Little was hit by a pitch to start things off, and
Andy Page followed that up with a single to put two runners on.
Brennan Ducote reached on a fielder's choice, and Little came around to score on an error by the Viking second baseman. Later in the inning Lassere singled through the left side brining home Ductoe to make it a 4-3 ballgame.
The Majors were not done there however. Junior
Hayden Williams pitched a three up-three down top of the 8
th that included a pair of strikeouts, and the Millsaps offense went to work in the bottom half.
Callaway doubled to lead off the inning, and a few batters later he scored on a Ducote double to tie the game at 4-4. Unfortunately, North Park responded again. The Vikings got a pair of solo home runs in the top of the 9th to take a 6-4 lead. Thankfully
Kelley Gunn was able to strand the bases loaded and give the Majors a chance in the bottom of the 9
th.
Lassere led off with a hit by pitch, seemingly a theme on the afternoon, and
Jimmy Johnstone followed suit with a single.
Christian Cooper laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to set the table for
Jon Dale Dieckman. Dieckman came through in the clutch as he singled through the left side of the infield to score both runs and tie the game.
Gunn pitched a perfect top of the 10
th inning and the Majors came to bat in the bottom half with a chance to win the game. Millsaps loaded the bases thanks to a pair of walks by Little and Page and a single by Ductoe. The Vikings were able to get one out, but in the next at bat freshman pinch hitter
Avery Brock worked the count full and drew the bases loaded walk to give the Majors the 7-6 win, their second of the season in walk-off fashion.
Game 2 vs. Fontbonne
In the second game of the afternoon, Fontbonne and Millsaps were locked in a pitcher's duel for the better part of five innings before the Majors opened things up in the bottom of the 5
th inning.
Callway tripled to start the inning and was later brought home on a sacrifice fly by
Jackson Hailey for the first run of the game. Millsaps got another run on a Griffin error, and two more runs on a Ducote double to grab the 4-0 lead.
They added a run in the 6
th and a run in the 7
th to move ahead 6-0. In the bottom of the 8
th it was Callway who again led off the inning with a hit, this time a single up the middle. He scored on an error by the Fontbonne shortstop. Hailey scored on a wild pitch, and Breland scored on a single from Little. Again the stage was set for Dieckman. With runners on the corners he singled to left field, brining home Page and giving Millsaps the 10-0 'run-rule' win.
With today's wins the Majors have now won five in a row, and have improved their record to 5-2 on the year.
Next up for Millsaps is another home game. The Majors will be looking to avenge their only two losses of the year as they host Huntingdon College at 4:00pm tomorrow night.
