JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps College baseball team used 12 hits to score 11 runs as they came-from-behind to beat Huntingdon College at Twenty Field on Monday night. The win is the sixth in a row for the Majors, and improves their record to 6-2 on the year. The Hawks fall to 3-3 overall this season.
So far in 2018 Huntingdon is the only team to beat Millsaps, and early on in the game the Hawks looked poised to grab their third win over the Majors. In the top of the 1
st Huntingdon put together five hits, including one home run, to score five runs and take the early lead.
In the bottom of the 3
rd the Millsaps offense started to get things going. Patrick Grumbly notched a RBI on a groundout to second base that allowed
Christian Cooper to score for the first Millsaps run.
Andy Page followed that up with a single that dropped in front of the Huntingdon left fielder.
Cavan Breland was able to score from third on the play, and make it a 5-2 game.
With
Barret Kaul settled in on the mound, the Majors offense went to work again in the bottom of the 6
th inning.
Page and
Jimmy Johnstone led off the inning with back-to-back singles. In the next at-bat
Brennan Ducote laced a ball through the left side of the infield that brought home Page to make it 5-3.
Chase Callaway followed suit with a single to load the bases.
Connor Woodall was hit by a pitch to score Johnstone, and
Wes Lassere hit a single into right center that brought home Ducote and Callway. Cooper singled right back up the middle to bring home Woodall, and as the Majors batted around in the inning, Page singled to bring home Lassere.
All told it was a six run inning on seven base hits, and the Majors found themselves leading 8-5 after the 6
th.
After Huntingdon responded with a run in the 7
th, Millsaps answered right back with a sacrifice fly from Cooper in the bottom half. In the 8
th the Majors got RBI singles from Callaway and Cooper, and that would be all the insurance Millsaps would need.
Senior
Chris Guerin earned his first save of the season as he worked 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball on the mound. Kaul picked up his second win of the season, and improved his record to 2-0.
The Majors are right back at home tomorrow night as they welcome #16 Texas-Tyler to Jackson. The first pitch from Twenty Field is set for 4:00pm.
