JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps College baseball team took a pair of games from the University of Dallas on Saturday to push their record to 8-3 on the year. The Majors are now 8-1 at home this season and have won eight of their last nine games.
Game 1
The first game of the series began on Friday and featured two rain delays before finally being suspended with Millsaps leading 8-1 in the top of the 8
th inning.
The Majors jumped on the Crusaders early as
Wes Lassere had a RBI single, and
Chase Callaway had a two-RBI double in the bottom of the first inning.
John Wiltshire completely dominated the Dallas hitters in the early going, but in the top of the 4
th the Crusaders were able to break through and get their first run of the game. Millsaps responded in the bottom half however, as
Brennan Ducote beat out an infield single.
Andy Page scored on the play to give the Majors a 4-1 lead.
Dallas got a solo homerun in the 5
th, but from that point on it was all Millsaps.
In the 5
th inning Lassere scored on an error by the Crusader second baseman. Later in the 6
th Ducote picked up his second RBI of the game on a single that scored
Patrick Grumbley.
In the 7
th Millsaps really opened things up.
Connor Woodall scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Grumbley tripled to right field which scored
Jimmy Fondren. Page followed that up with a single to bring home Grumbley, and after seven full innings the Majors led 9-2.
After the game was suspended because of Friday's rain, the two teams returned to Twenty Field on Saturday morning. That layoff did not hurt the Millsaps bats.
The Majors picked up right where they left off as in the bottom of the 8
th Fondren laced a RBI single to right field, and
Christian Cooper followed that up with a RBI double to make it 11-2. Later in the inning Fondren scored on an error by the catcher to give Millsaps their 12
th run of the game, a season high.
Bubba White pitched a scoreless 9
th inning out of the bullpen to cap off the seventh win of the season for Millsaps.
Game 2
In the second game it was the University of Dallas bats that came alive early. The Crusaders scored at least one run in each of the first four innings. All told, UD led 8-2 after four innings of play.
The two Millsaps runs came by way of a wild pitch in the first inning, and a RBI groundout from Cooper in the 4
th.
Freshman
Conner Haynes entered from the bullpen in the 4
th inning, and completely silenced the Dallas bats. His final line showed six innings pitched, just two hits allowed, four strikeouts and one walk.
In the bottom of the 5
th inning Millsaps scored another run on a RBI double from Woodall, but it was the 6
th inning where things really came alive.
Despite two quick outs, the Majors loaded the bases thanks to a hit by pitch of
Jimmy Johnstone, a
Cavan Breland single and a walk by Page. Ducote stepped to the plate and launched a 3-2 pitch over the right-field wall for a grand slam. It was Ducote's team-leading second homerun of the season and made it an 8-7 ballgame. Millsaps was not done there however. The Majors loaded the bases again, and
Avery Brock drew his second bases loaded walk of the season to score Woodall and tie the game at 8-8.
Haynes put up another zero on the scoreboard in the top of the 7
th, and Page singled to score Johnstone in the bottom half to give Millsaps a 9-8 lead.
The Majors added a pair of insurance runs later in the inning on a single by Lassere, and a steal of home by Ducote to take the 11-8 lead.
Over the final two innings, the University of Dallas never recovered, and Millsaps held on to pick up their eighth win of the season.
Next up, the Majors will host cross-town rival Belhaven in the first game of the Cowboy Maloney series. Tuesday night's first-pitch from Twenty Field is set for 6:00pm.
