JACKSON, Miss. – The annual Cowboy Maloney Series got underway at Twenty Field on Tuesday night. The Millsaps College Majors scored early and often as they easily handled their crosstown rival Belhaven 11-2. Millsaps has now won three in a row, and nine of their last ten, to improve their record to 9-3 on the year. The Blazers fall to 2-8 this season.
Kenny Wright got the call on the mound for the Majors, and he made quick work of the Belhaven hitters in the top of the 1
st inning.
In the bottom half of the inning the Millsaps offense went right to work.
Jimmy Johnstone got things going with a single, and
Brennan Ducote followed that up with a walk. During the next at bat Millsaps executed a double-steal, the Belhaven catcher made an error on the play that allowed Johnstone to score the first run of the game. Later in the inning
Connor Woodall singled through the left side of the infield to bring home Ducote and make it 2-0 Millsaps.
In the top of the 3
rd the Blazers scored their only two runs of the game on a pair of singles to tie the game at 2-2. From that point on Millsaps dominated the entire ballgame.
The Majors recaptured the lead in the bottom of the 4
th when Woodall scored on another Belhaven error, and
Christian Cooper scored on a balk to make it a 4-2 ballgame. In the bottom of the 5
th Millsaps added two more runs. Woodall singled to bring home Ducote, and
Chase Callaway also scored on the play after the Blazer left fielder misplayed the ball.
In the bottom of the 7
th Callaway singled and Woodall reached on a fielder's choice. Later in the inning they both came around to score on a pair of Belhaven wild pitches to make it 8-2 Millsaps.
The Majors got their final three insurance runs in the bottom of the 8
th when they loaded the bases on three consecutive walks. The first run came via a passed ball, and Ducote followed with a RBI single, his team-leading 14
th of the year, to make it 10-2. In the very next at bat
Wes Lassere singled to score
Alan Merkle for the 11
th and final run of the game.
Six different pitchers combined to allow just five hits and the two runs, but it was
Langston Haden who earned his first win of the season on the mound. He pitched the 5
th and 6
th innings where he allowed zero hits and struck out three Belhaven batters.
What's Next?
The Majors now shift their attention to SAA play when they welcome Rhodes College to Jackson this weekend. First pitch Friday night is set for 6:00pm. The three-game series will conclude with a 1:00pm doubleheader on Saturday.
