JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's basketball team used an 18-3 run through the end of the first quarter to the end of the second to get past Centre, 59-53 Sunday afternoon. Millsaps improves to 8-14 overall and 5-6 in the SAA, While Centre drops to 13-8 and 4-7 in the conference.
Freshman
Dia Fortenberry led all players, finishing with 26 points, 13 rebounds and one steal. Sophomore
Megan Donaldson also got it done off the bench coming away with 15 points. Junior
Millicent Butler and sophomore
Caroline Guilbeau each chipped in seven points for the Majors.
Millsaps started the game slow and Centre was firing on all cylinders, jumping out to a 7-0 lead over the first two minutes of the game. Fortenberry and Donaldson got the Majors back in the game and
Kasi Matthews tied it at seven with 3:45 on the clock. After Centre went ahead 15-8, Millsaps started their run with a jumper by Fortenberry at the first quarter buzzer.
The offense and strong defense continued into the second for the Majors. Millsaps surged to an 18-0 run and held Centre scoreless over the first 7:23 minutes, finishing the half on an 18-3 run, and took a 26-18 lead into halftime.
Centre cut the lead to 26-20 before Donaldson scored eight points in the third to lead an 11-7 run to close the third with some key three-pointers. Millsaps held onto a 37-29 lead at the end of the three.
Fortenberry scored 12 of her 26 points in the fourth quarter. Centre made it a two-point game with 5:28 left and kept it at a 53-50 Millsaps lead with 2:01 to go. But Fortenberry and Guilbeau hit their free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Millsaps is back in action in Memphis when they take on Rhodes at 6:00pm on Friday.
