JACKSON, Miss. – Millsaps College returned to SAA play on Friday night as they began a three-game series with Berry College. The visiting Vikings scored a pair of runs in the 1
st inning, and never surrendered that lead on their way to the 8-3 win.
With the loss the Majors fall to 15-6 overall on the year and 5-2 in conference play. Berry improves to 13-5 overall and moves into a tie with Millsaps atop the SAA standings with a 5-2 conference mark.
The Vikings scored the first five runs of the ballgame, but the Majors' offense broke through in the top of the 6
th.
Patrick Grumbley led off the inning with a walk, and
Andy Page followed it up with a double down the left field line to put runners in scoring position. Later in the inning
Brennan Ducote had a RBI groundout to score Grumbley for the first Millsaps run of the game.
Unfortunately, Berry responded with three runs in the top of the 7
th to make it 8-1.
In the Millsaps half of the 7
th inning,
Jimmy Johnstone scored on an error by the Viking shortstop to make it 8-2.
In the 8
th Page led off with home run over the right-field wall to close the gap to 8-3, but that would be the end of the scoring for the night.
Berry held on in the 9
th to take game one of the weekend series 8-3.
What's Next?
The two teams return to Twenty Field tomorrow afternoon where they will conclude their series with a doubleheader. First pitch in game one is set for 1:00pm.
