JACKSON, Miss. – Millsaps College wrapped up their Southern Athletic Association (SAA) series against Berry College with a doubleheader at Twenty Field on Saturday afternoon. The Majors took both games by scores of 6-4 and 6-2. With the sweep Millsaps takes the weekend series two games to one.
The Majors improve their record to 17-6 overall, and 7-2 in the SAA. Berry falls to 13-7 overall and 5-4 in conference play. Millsaps now sits alone atop of the conference standings in sole possession of first place.
Game 1
The Majors' offense started out hot in game one, as they grabbed an early lead that they would not relinquish.
In the top of the first inning
Andy Page,
Connor Woodall and
Jimmy Johnstone all singled to load the bases. With one out in the inning the flood gates opened for the Majors:
Chase Callaway drew a bases loaded walk to score Page,
Wes Lassere reached on an error that allowed Woodall to score,
Cavan Breland was hit by a pitch which brought home Johnston, and
Jackson Hailey capped off the scoring with a sacrifice squeeze bunt scoring Callaway to make it 4-0 Millsaps.
The Majors added another run in the 3
rd on a RBI single by
Patrick Grumbley to push their lead to 5-0.
After, Berry broke into the scoring column with a pair of runs in the 4
th inning, the game settled into a back-and-forth pitcher's duel with neither squad getting much going offensively.
Jacob Mardick was the starter on the mound for the Majors and he turned in an outstanding effort to pick up his second win of the year. His final line showed 7.1 innings pitched, three strikeouts and just two earned runs allowed.
In the bottom of the 5
th inning Millsaps got an insurance run on a RBI single by Page to make it a 6-2 ballgame. The Vikings did score a pair in the top of the 8
th, but
Hayden Williams was able to put an end to any comeback attempts as he recorded the final four outs of the game to pick up his second save of the season.
Game 2
In the second game it was the Vikings who scored first on a RBI double in the top of the 2
nd to grab a 1-0 lead. The Majors answered back right back in the bottom of the 3
rd however.
In a very similar way to the 1
st inning of game one, Millsaps loaded the bases, this time on a hit-by-pitch of
Christian Cooper, a single by
Mason Little and a walk to Woodall. In the next at bat Johnstone singled to score Little. Mardick, who served as the designated hitter in the second game, drew a bases loaded walk to put Millsaps up 2-1. Later in the inning, with two outs Callaway doubled to bring home Mardick and Johnstone to make it 4-1 Majors.
Millsaps was not done there however. The Majors scored a run in the bottom of the 4
th, and a run in the 5
th to go up 6-2.
Langston Haden and
Chris Guerin combined to allow just two runs, both unearned on the mound. Haden picked up his third win of the season after pitching five solid innings and striking out five.
