BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Millsaps College baseball team was back in SAA action on Saturday afternoon as they traveled to Birmingham Southern for a doubleheader. In game one the Majors' offense erupted for 14 runs on their way to a 14-4 win. In the second game, it was BSC that picked up the win by a score of 5-2.
Millsaps now sits at 18-8 on the season and 8-3 in conference play. They currently trail Rhodes by half a game for first place in the SAA standings. The Panthers are 13-10 overall and 5-6 in conference.
Game 1
Barret Kaul got plenty of help from the offense in the first game as he picked up his fourth win of the season. His final line showed five innings pitched, and just two earned runs allowed. He struck out three batters in the winning effort.
Chris Guerin pitched the final four innings on the mound to pick up his second save of the year. Like Kaul, he allowed just two earned runs. He struck out four batters, and scattered six hits.
Offensively, it was a pair of five-run innings, the 3
rd and 9
th that propelled Millsaps to the victory.
Connor Woodall led way with a pair of timely hits. He finished the game with a season-high five RBIs. His two-run single in the top of the 3
rd inning tied the game at 2-2, and another two-run single in the top of the 9
th was part of five insurance runs that Millsaps scored that inning.
Andy Page led the team with four hits. He also drove in a run and came around to score twice as the leadoff man.
Brennan Ducote broke out of his slump in a big way. He was 2-4 at the plate with three RBIs. His RBI single in the top of the 3
rd helped the Majors take a 5-2 lead at that point. He also had a pair of RBIs in the 9
th inning that helped Millsaps polish off their 14-4 win.
Game 2
In the second game, the Majors' offense stayed hot early on. In the top of the 1
st inning Page and Woodall reached on back-to-back singles to set the table. After
Jimmy Johnstone moved them over,
Wes Lassere came through in a big spot with a single to left field to Millsaps up 2-0 early.
Unfortunately, those would be the only two Millsaps runs in the second game. The Majors only managed one more hit the rest of the game, a single by
Jackson Hailey in the top of the 5
th.
The Panthers scored twice in the first, once in the second and twice in the fourth to grab the 5-2 win and even up the series.
What's Next?
The two teams return to Striplin Field tomorrow afternoon for the rubber-game in the three-game series. First pitch is set for 1:00pm.
