Baseball Falls at Home to UW-Platteville

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps College baseball team returned home on Tuesday night for a non-conference matchup with the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. The Majors led nearly all night long, but the Pioneers rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the 9th to escape Twenty Field with an 8-7 win.

The loss drops the Majors to 18-10 overall on the year. UW-Platteville improves to 5-10 this year.

Millsaps struck first when Jacob Mardick doubled to right center scoring Andy Page to put the Majors up 1-0 after the 1st inning.

After the Pioneers scored in both the 2nd and 3rd innings to move ahead 2-1, Chase Callaway really opened things up for Millsaps.

In the bottom half of the 3rd Callaway came to bat with the bases full of Majors. He lined a 1-2 pitch down the first base line to clear the bases and put Millsaps up 4-2. He was not done there however. In the bottom of the 4th he hit a chopper over the third baseman's head. Connor Woodall and Page both scored on the play to make it 6-2 Millsaps.

Unfortunately, the Pioneers fought back in the middle innings. UW-Platteville plated four runs in the top of the 5th to tie the game at 6-6.

The Majors answered in their half of the 5th when Page singled home Cavan Breland to give Millsaps a 7-6 lead.

Millsaps looked poised to get back in the win column, but down to their last three outs the Pioneers were able to plate two runs in the top of the 9th and held on for the 8-7 win.

Nine different pitchers saw time on the mound for Millsaps, and combined to strike out 11 batters.
