JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps College baseball team returned home on Tuesday night for a non-conference matchup with the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. The Majors led nearly all night long, but the Pioneers rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the 9
th to escape Twenty Field with an 8-7 win.
The loss drops the Majors to 18-10 overall on the year. UW-Platteville improves to 5-10 this year.
Millsaps struck first when
Jacob Mardick doubled to right center scoring
Andy Page to put the Majors up 1-0 after the 1
st inning.
After the Pioneers scored in both the 2
nd and 3
rd innings to move ahead 2-1,
Chase Callaway really opened things up for Millsaps.
In the bottom half of the 3
rd Callaway came to bat with the bases full of Majors. He lined a 1-2 pitch down the first base line to clear the bases and put Millsaps up 4-2. He was not done there however. In the bottom of the 4
th he hit a chopper over the third baseman's head.
Connor Woodall and Page both scored on the play to make it 6-2 Millsaps.
Unfortunately, the Pioneers fought back in the middle innings. UW-Platteville plated four runs in the top of the 5
th to tie the game at 6-6.
The Majors answered in their half of the 5
th when Page singled home
Cavan Breland to give Millsaps a 7-6 lead.
Millsaps looked poised to get back in the win column, but down to their last three outs the Pioneers were able to plate two runs in the top of the 9
th and held on for the 8-7 win.
Nine different pitchers saw time on the mound for Millsaps, and combined to strike out 11 batters.
What's Next?
The Majors hit the road this weekend for a crucial SAA series. Millsaps travels to Atlanta for three games against Oglethopre University. Currently the Majors lead the Stormy Petrels by one game in the conference standings.
