ATLANTA, Ga. – The Millsaps College baseball program was on the road Friday evening for the first game of a weekend SAA series with Oglethorpe University. The Majors scored first, but the Stormy Petrels pounded out 13 hits on their way to a 14-4 win.
Millsaps falls to 18-11 on the year and 8-5 in the conference. Oglethorpe improves to 18-10 overall and 8-5 in SAA play. After today's action around the league the two teams find themselves tied for third place in the standings.
The Majors got on the board early in the top of the 1
st inning.
Andy Page led off the game by reaching on an error by the Oglethorpe shortstop. He advanced to third on a balk, and later scored when
Connor Woodall doubled down the right field line.
The Stormy Petrels answered back with two runs in the bottom of the 2
nd to take a 2-1 lead, but in the top of the 3
rd Millsaps responded in a big way.
Patrick Grumbley and Page worked back-to-back walks to set the table for the Majors. After both players moved up on a groundout,
Jacob Mardick singled through the right side bringing home Grumbley to tie the game at 2-2. In the very next at bat
Wes Lassere singled to left field which scored Page. Later in the inning
Chase Callaway reached on a fielder's choice. Mardick scored on the play to make it 4-2 Millsaps.
Unfortunately, it was all Oglethorpe from that point on. The Stormy Petrels scored five runs in the 3
rd, two in the 4
th, three in the 6
th and two in the 7
th to cap off their 14-4 win.
What's Next?
The two teams return to Anderson Field tomorrow afternoon to wrap up their series with a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12:00pm CT.
