Majors Fall on the Road to #16 UT-Tyler

TYLER, Texas – On Tuesday, the Millsaps College baseball team hit the road for the first time in over month as they traveled to take on #16 UT-Tyler. The Majors came back from an early deficit to lead 8-6, but the Patriots scored the final three runs of the ballgame to escape with the 9-8 win.

UT-Tyler scored the first three runs of the game, and early on it looked to be headed for a repeat of the midweek game on February 20th where the Patriots won 7-1 at Twenty Field.

This time however, the Millsaps offense responded. Connor Woodall got the Majors on the board in the top of the 3rd with a RBI groundout that scored Cavan Breland to make it 3-1.

The Patriots got a pair of runs in the bottom half on a double, but in the top of the 4th the Millsaps offense really came alive.

The Majors loaded the bases before Jimmy Johnstone singled up the middle to bring home Wes Lassere. UT-Tyler made a pitching change, but that did not bother Breland as he doubled to right-center bringing home Christian Cooper and Chase Callaway to make it 5-4.

After a groundout, Andy Page and Woodall worked back-to-back walks. Johnstone scored on the ball four to Woodall to tie the game at 5-5. In the very next at bat Brennan Ducote hit a sacrifice fly, and after the top of the 4th Millsaps led 6-5.

UT-Tyler tied things up again at 6-6 in their half of the 5th inning, but in the 7th Ducote had the answer for Millsaps. He sent the first pitch he saw over the left centerfield fence for a two-run homerun, his fourth of the season, to give the Majors an 8-6 lead.

Unfortunately, after the 7th inning stretch the host Patriots were able to push across three runs to retake the lead at 9-8. That score would hold over the final two innings, to give UT-Tyler the win, and season-sweep of the Majors.

What's Next?

Millsaps is now 11-5 on the year, and still 2-1 in the conference. The Majors return to SAA play this weekend as they travel to Arkansas to take on Hendrix in a three-game series. Play begins with a 1:00pm doubleheader on Saturday, and the series concludes with a 12:00pm game on Sunday afternoon.
