CONWAY, Ark. – The Millsaps College baseball team continued their high level of play inside the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) as the Majors swept a doubleheader from Hendrix College on Friday evening.
Millsaps improves to 13-5 overall and 4-1 in the conference. The Warriors fall to 4-10 overall and 2-3 within the SAA.
Game 1
Barret Kaul already has one SAA Pitcher of the Week award under his belt this season, and he made his case for another one in the first game of the twinbill. He turned in seven strong innings on the mound, striking out four and allowing no earned runs to pick up his third win of the season.
The offense provided plenty of early support in the first game. The Majors struck first in inning number one as
Wes Lassere singled home
Andy Page to give Millsaps the lead they would never relinquish.
Christian Cooper would add to that lead with a two-RBI single in the third to make it a 3-0 game.
Hendrix got their runs in the bottom of 6
th inning, but Millsaps responded in the later innings to really put the game away.
In the top of the 7
th Jimmy Johnstone singled to bring home
Chase Callaway and
Brennan Ducote, and in the 8
th inning Ducote doubled to score
Connor Woodall.
The Majors were not content with a 6-2 lead however. In the top of the 9
th Johnstone notched another RBI single, and
Cavan Breland added a sacrifice fly to make it 8-2.
Chris Guerin pitched a scoreless bottom of the 9
th inning and the Majors won their third straight SAA contest 8-2.
Game 2
In the evening's second game Millsaps was forced to make a late comeback to secure the victory.
The Majors did strike first again, this time on a two-RBI single from Callaway to make it 2-0 in the first.
The Warriors answered back in a big way however. Hendrix scored one in the first, one in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead.
Millsaps responded in the top of the 5
th with a two-RBI single from Ducote in the 5
th to close the gap to 6-4.
Unfortunately, Hendrix fought right back. They got three runs in their half of the inning to push the lead to 9-4.
As has been the case all season-long however, there was no quit in the Majors. Millsaps got a run back in the 6
th on a RBI groundout from Breland, and down to their last three outs in the top of the 7
th the Majors' offense really went to work.
Millsaps loaded the bases, and proceeded to score three runs on a hit by pitch and two walks to make it 9-8. With the pressure on, the Warriors defense made an error on a ball that
Andy Page hit. Johnstone scored on the play to tie things at 9-9. Later in the inning, Woodall came through in the clutch with a single to score
Alan Merkle and put Millsaps up 10-9.
Drew Carter shut the door in the bottom of the 7
th to pick up his first save of the year, and seal the win for the Majors.
