CONWAY, Ark. – On Saturday the Majors opened up a weekend SAA series with a doubleheader against the Colonels of Centre College. Due to weather concerns both in Danville, Kentucky and at home in Jackson, the series was moved to Conway, Arkansas and the campus of Hendrix College.
The Majors held off a late Centre comeback in the first game to pick up a 6-5 win. In the second game of the afternoon the Colonels used a big bottom of the 5
th inning to even up the series with a 13-7 victory.
Game 1
After a pair of scoreless innings to start, the Majors' offense broke through in the top of the 3
rd inning.
Andy Page got things started with a one-out base hit. The single to left field was the 200
th hit of his Millsaps College career. After
Cavan Breland singled, and
Jimmy Johnstone reached on a fielder's choice,
Chase Callaway came through with a RBI single to right field scoring Page to give Millsaps the first run of the ballgame. Later in the inning, Millsaps pulled off a successful double-steal in which Johnstone scored to give the Majors a 2-0 lead.
Centre plated a pair of runs in their half of the 3
rd inning to tie things up at 2-2, and both pitching staffs posted scoreless innings until the top the 6
th.
Wes Lassere led the inning off with a double down the left field line. He scored in the very next at bat thanks to a
Connor Woodall single to center to give the Majors a 3-2 lead.
Unfortunately, the Colonels answered in their half of the inning again with a two-RBI single of their own to move ahead 4-3.
In the top of the 7
th inning Johstone singled to right center, scoring Breland who had reached on a walk, to tie the game at 4-4.
In the very next inning the Majors grabbed a lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the ballgame.
With the bases loaded, Page singled up the middle to score Woodall. The Centre second baseman made a throwing error on the play which allowed
Alan Merkle to come home, and put Millsaps up 6-4.
The Colonels did plate a run in the bottom of the 8
th inning, but
Jacob Mardick recorded the final six outs of the game on the mound to nail down his second save of the season. Freshman
Conner Haynes, who pitched 1.1 innings in relief out of the bullpen, picked up his fourth win of the season.
Game 2
In the second game of the afternoon, the Millsaps offense broke the game open early on with a huge top of the 3
rd inning.
Patrick Grumbley started things off with a RBI single scoring
John Houston Robertson for the first run of the game. After another Page single, Breland beat out a ball hit in the infield for a hit. Grumbley scored on the play to make it 2-0 Millsaps. Johnstone picked up a RBI on a sacrifice squeeze bunt, Callaway doubled which scored Breland, and Woodall singled to bring home Callaway. All told the Majors held a 5-0 lead after the top of the 3
rd inning.
Centre answered back with a run in the 3
rd and two more in the 4
th to close the gap at 5-3. After Johnstone stole home in the 5
th to make it 6-3 Millsaps, the Colonels put up nine runs in their half of the inning to go ahead 12-6. Centre also added an insurance run in the top of 6
th to make it 13-6.
The Majors did get a run across in the top of the 7
th inning on a RBI single Callaway, but the nine-run 5
th inning proved to be too much to overcome as the Colonels evened up the series with the 13-7 win.
