JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps College baseball team closed out the 2018 regular season on Monday night by hosting their cross-town rival Belhaven University in the final game of the annual Cowboy Maloney Series.
The Majors came into the game having already secured the Cowboy Maloney trophy by taking the first two games of the three-game season series.
In this matchup Millsaps fought back from a late 5-4 deficit, to come away with a 7-5 win and complete the season sweep of the Blazers.
The win improves the Majors' record to 23-17 on the year. Belhaven falls to 11-22 this season.
The Blazers got on the board first with a RBI single to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the 2
nd inning.
Millsaps answered back in a big way in the bottom of the 3
rd to take the lead. The Majors loaded the bases on a single by
Patrick Grumbley and back-to-back walks to
Andy Page and
Cavan Breland. With the bases loaded
Jimmy Johnstone singled through the right side. Grumbley and Page came around to score on the play to give Millsaps a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning
Connor Woodall laced a double into right center, Breland and Johnstone were both able to score and put the Majors up 4-1.
Unfortunately, Belhaven would not go quietly. They responded with a huge top of the 6
th inning, scoring four runs on four hits to move in front 5-4.
Just one inning later, in the bottom of the 7
th, Millsaps grabbed a lead that they would hold on to for the remainder of the ballgame.
Page got things going with a leadoff single. In the very next at bat Breland laid down a bunt that he beat out for a single. After a collision on the play at first base, the ball got away from Belhaven which allowed Page to score the tying run all the way from first base. After a Johnstone sacrifice bunt,
Chase Callaway brought home Breland on a RBI single to put Millsaps ahead 6-5. With two outs in the inning
Wes Lassere gave the Majors the much-needed insurance run as he singled to center scoring Callaway to make it 7-5.
John Wiltshire worked a scoreless 8
th inning to pick up his second win of the season.
Jacob Mardick recorded the final three outs of the game in the 9
th to secure the 7-5 win, and nail down his third save of 2018.
