ROME, Ga. – The number five seeded Millsaps College baseball team opened up postseason play by taking on the four seed, Birmingham Southern. Millsaps led 3-1 midway through the contest, but the Panthers used a big bottom of the 6
th inning to come away with the 9-4 opening round win.
BSC struck first with one run on two hits in the bottom of the 1
st to take a 1-0 lead.
It was not long however before the Majors answered back.
John Houston Robertson opened up the top of the 3
rd inning with a single. After
Christian Cooper was hit by a pitch, both advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from
Patrick Grumbley. In the next at bat
Andy Page hit a ball that the BSC shortstop made an error on. Robertson scored on the play to tie the game at 1-1.
After
Barret Kaul held the Panthers scoreless in the bottom of the 3
rd, the Majors offense went right back to work in the top of the 4
th inning.
Millsaps loaded the bases on a
Jimmy Johnstone single, a
Chase Callaway walk and a
Connor Woodall single.
Wes Lassere was up next, and he came through with a single to left field. Johnstone and Callaway both scored on the play to put the Majors in front 3-1.
Unfortunately, Birmingham Southern responded with seven unanswered runs. The Panthers scored five runs on two hits and two Millsaps errors in the bottom of the 6
th. BSC then added a pair of insurance runs on three hits in the bottom of the 7
th to take an 8-3 lead late in the ballgame.
The Majors got a run in the top of the 8
th when Woodall reached on throwing error allowing Johnstone to score, but the late deficit proved too much to overcome. BSC added another run in the bottom of the 8
th, and then held on in the 9
