JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps College baseball team closed out the 2018 regular season on a high note by completing the season sweep of rival Belhaven University on Monday night.
With the regular season behind them the Majors now shift their focus to postseason play and the SAA Tournament. After stumbling during the middle portion of their schedule Millsaps enters this weekend playing good baseball having won four out of their last five games.
The eight-team field is split into two separate regions. Millsaps is the #5 seed and will play in the Berry College region along with the host #1 seed and host Vikings, #4 seed Birmingham Southern and #8 seed Hendrix.
Oglethorpe, Centre and Sewanee will all play at #2 seed Rhodes College.
The Majors will face Birmingham Southern in the first round. When the two teams met for a three-game series back in March Millsaps won the first matchup 14-4 but dropped the final two games of the series.
The Millsaps pitching staff is tops in the conference in terms of batting average against. The Majors hold their opponents to just a .262 mark at the plate. A big reason why is there are four players on the staff with double-digit appearances and an ERA that is under 4.00.
Freshman
Conner Haynes leads the group with an ERA of 3.22 and has also posted a 4-1 record. Those four wins are tied with
Barret Kaul. Kaul leads the Majors with 47.1 innings pitched and 37 strikeouts.
Jacob Mardick has pitched both as a starter and reliever this year, as well as seeing 19 at bats at the plate. On the mound he has logged 46.2 innings, struck out 28 batters and nailed down a team-high three saves.
The offense is led by their catalyst and lead-off man
Andy Page. He ranks fourth in the SAA in batting average with an even .400 mark. He has also driven in 17 runs and swiped 13 bases. Fellow outfielder
Jimmy Johnstone is not far behind as he is hitting .357, and
Chase Callaway and
Connor Woodall, who are hitting .324 and .309 respectively, are both tied for second in runs driven in with 28 apiece.
Millsaps and BSC will play their first-round game tomorrow afternoon with a 1:30pm CT first-pitch. Fans can follow all the action via live stats and live video by visiting the
