Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Takes Two Games on Friday to Advance to the SAA Semifinals

ROME, Ga. –Because of their opening round loss to Birmingham Southern, the Millsaps College baseball team came into Friday with their backs against the wall in a win or go home situation.

In the first game the Majors came away with a 6-5 walk-off win over the number eight seeded Hendrix College Warriors. That set up a rematch with BSC. In the second game the Millsaps offense exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth inning to upset the fourth seeded Panthers 9-7.

Game 1
The Majors got on the board first when Chase Callaway scored on a Christian Cooper groundout to give Millsaps a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning.

After the Warriors scored three runs on a pair of doubles in the 3rd, Millsaps answered back in the bottom of the 4th.

Mason Little led off the inning with a single up the middle. He later scored on a sacrifice fly by Cavan Breland to make it a 3-2 game.

Hendrix responded with two more runs in the top of the 5th, but from that point on the remainder of the offense belonged to Millsaps.

The Majors tied the game up in the bottom of the 6th inning. Breland singled home Cooper and later scored on an error by the Warrior shortstop. Later in the inning Connor Woodall scored on a balk to tie the game up at 5-5.

After a pair of scoreless innings, Millsaps really turned up the pressure on Hendrix by loading the bases in the bottom of the 9th inning. Jimmy Johnstone and Little each had back-back-back to singles, and were advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Wes Lassere. Cooper was intentionally walked to set up a force out everywhere. That move came back to bite Hendrix however, as in the next at bat Breland was hit by a pitch allowing Johnstone to come in for the winning run.

John Wiltshire was spectacular pitching in relief. He entered in the top of the 5th inning, and only allowed five hits and no runs over the final 4.2 innings to pick up his third win of the season.

Game 2
After eliminating Hendrix, Millsaps had to turn right back around and play another elimination game, this time a rematch with Birmingham Southern.

Offense was the story in this matchup as both teams totaled eleven hits each.

Again it was the Majors who struck first for a pair of runs in the top of the 2nd

Lassere singled through the right side to bring home Callaway, who earlier had reached on a base hit. After Jackson Hailey singled down the left field line to load the bases, Andy Page was hit by a pitch which allowed Johnstone to score and make it 2-0 Millsaps.

The Panthers responded with three runs on three hits, and one Major error in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 3-2 lead.

However, in the top of the 6th inning the Millsaps offense exploded for five runs on four hits and two BSC errors to really take control of the game.

Breland got things going with a single to right field scoring Lassere. In the next at bat Page walked which set up a bases loaded situation for Woodall. With a full count he pushed a bunt just past the pitcher's mound. When the ball got away from the BSC defense all three base runners came home to give Millsaps a 6-4 lead. Woodall later scored when the Panther's shortstop made an error on a ball hit by Callaway. All-told the Majors held a 7-4 lead after the top of the 6th

Millsaps added two crucial insurance runs in the top of the 8th on RBI singles from Little and Cooper to push their lead out to 9-4.

Staring elimination in the face, Birmingham Southern refused to go quietly as the Panthers plated three runs in the bottom of the 9th. It was not enough however, as the Majors held on for the 9-7 win.

In a double-elimination format where rested pitching comes at a premium, senior Kenny Wright was exactly what Millsaps needed in game two. He pitched a complete game, his first of the season, to earn his second win of the year and send the Majors on to the semifinal round.

What's Next?
Tomorrow afternoon Millsaps will take on the number one seed and host, Berry College. The Majors will need to take the first game in order to force a winner-take-all game two for a spot in next weekend's SAA Championship Series.

First pitch is set for 11:00am CT. Fans can keep up to date with all of the action by visiting the TOURNAMENT WEBSITE.
