Baseball Secures Third-Straight Cowboy Maloney Trophy with 9-3 Win at Belhaven

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps College baseball team made the short trip to Smith-Wills Stadium for the second game of the Cowboy Maloney Series with the Blazers of Belhaven University.

The Majors' offense totaled ten hits and held the Blazers to just three runs to pick up the 9-3 win. Tonight's win, combined with the 11-2 win back on February 27th assures that the Cowboy Maloney Trophy will remain on the campus of Millsaps College for another year. This is the third consecutive time that Millsaps has taken the three-game season series.

The win improves the Majors' record to 19-13 on the year. Belhaven falls to 7-19 overall.

Kenny Wright got the start on the mound for Millsaps, and he was outstanding for the better part of five innings. He allowed just four hits, and one earned run over 5.1 innings. John Wiltshire, Chris Guerin, Hayden Williams and Jacob Mardick all saw action out the bullpen for the Majors. They combined to allow just four hits and two runs over the final 3.2 innings to secure the win.

The offense scored early and often in this one. Millsaps got one run across when Wes Lassere hit a sacrifice fly to left field bringing home Andy Page.

In the top of the 2nd inning Millsaps added to their lead. Jimmy Johnstone led off the inning with a single, and he advanced all the way to third base on an error by the Belhaven left fielder. In the next at bat Cavan Breland beat out an infield single allowing Johnstone to score to make it 2-0. Later on in the inning Breland scored on a wild pitch, and the Majors led 3-0.

Millsaps pushed their lead out to 4-0 in the 5th thanks to a RBI double by Page, but the Blazers scored their first run of the game in the bottom half.

Jackson Hailey had a RBI in the 6th, and RBIs from Lassere and Chase Callaway in the 7th really put things out of reach for Belhaven.

The Majors got their final insurance runs in the top of 8th on a double by Patrick Grumbly and a sac-fly by Page to put their lead at 9-2.

The Blazers were able to plate a run in the 9th, but Mardick retired the final two batters of the game to secure the win.
