JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps College baseball team made the short trip to Smith-Wills Stadium for the second game of the Cowboy Maloney Series with the Blazers of Belhaven University.
The Majors' offense totaled ten hits and held the Blazers to just three runs to pick up the 9-3 win. Tonight's win, combined with the 11-2 win back on February 27
th assures that the Cowboy Maloney Trophy will remain on the campus of Millsaps College for another year. This is the third consecutive time that Millsaps has taken the three-game season series.
The win improves the Majors' record to 19-13 on the year. Belhaven falls to 7-19 overall.
Kenny Wright got the start on the mound for Millsaps, and he was outstanding for the better part of five innings. He allowed just four hits, and one earned run over 5.1 innings.
John Wiltshire,
Chris Guerin,
Hayden Williams and
Jacob Mardick all saw action out the bullpen for the Majors. They combined to allow just four hits and two runs over the final 3.2 innings to secure the win.
The offense scored early and often in this one. Millsaps got one run across when
Wes Lassere hit a sacrifice fly to left field bringing home
Andy Page.
In the top of the 2
nd inning Millsaps added to their lead.
Jimmy Johnstone led off the inning with a single, and he advanced all the way to third base on an error by the Belhaven left fielder. In the next at bat
Cavan Breland beat out an infield single allowing Johnstone to score to make it 2-0. Later on in the inning Breland scored on a wild pitch, and the Majors led 3-0.
Millsaps pushed their lead out to 4-0 in the 5
th thanks to a RBI double by Page, but the Blazers scored their first run of the game in the bottom half.
Jackson Hailey had a RBI in the 6
th, and RBIs from Lassere and
Chase Callaway in the 7
th really put things out of reach for Belhaven.
The Majors got their final insurance runs in the top of 8
th on a double by
Patrick Grumbly and a sac-fly by Page to put their lead at 9-2.
The Blazers were able to plate a run in the 9
th, but Mardick retired the final two batters of the game to secure the win.
What's Next?
The Majors are back at Twenty Field as they return to SAA play this weekend. Millsaps will host Sewanee in a three-game series. Saturday's doubleheader is set for a 12:00pm start time. The series will conclude with one game at 12:00pm Sunday afternoon.
