JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps College baseball team returned home on Saturday afternoon for the first game of a weekend SAA series with the Tigers of Sewanee.
The game had to be adjusted due to the weather, and featured a 54 minute rain delay in the 5
th inning. Despite the Majors outhitting the Tigers, Sewanee escaped with a 1-0 win.
The only run of the ballgame came in the top of the 1
st inning. The Sewanee leadoff batter reached on a walk, and later advanced all the way to third on a pair of wild pitches. He scored on a RBI groundout.
Langston Haden got the start on the mound, and unfortunately picked up the tough-luck loss. He allowed just one hit, the only one of the game for Sewanee which did not come until there was one out in the 6
th inning. He struck out five batters, and scattered four walks over seven innings pitched.
Chris Guerin pitched the final two innings for Millsaps, and he was absolutely unhittable. He also struck out a pair of Tiger batters in relief.
The offense put up four hits on the afternoon, two of those coming off the bat of
Jimmy Johnstone, but never could really get anything going. A pair of innings were cut short when the Majors were caught stealing at second base, and Millsaps struggled to get a timely hit when they had men in scoring position.
The loss drops the Majors to 19-14 overall and 8-8 in the SAA. Sewanee improves to 10-19 overall and 4-12 in conference play.
What's Next?
The two teams return to Twenty Field to wrap up their series with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon. First pitch of game one is set for 11:00am.
