JACKSON, Miss. – It was the opening day of NCAA soccer across the country, and the Millsaps College Majors began their 2018 season by welcoming rival Belhaven University to Harper Davis Field. The teams traded goals in a first half that featured a thirty-minute weather delay.
Despite several good looks on both sides in the later part of the game, which included two overtime periods, the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Blazers got on the board first in the 19
th minute when Alex Trammel scored on an assist by Emily Malcom. Not long after the goal the skies opened up and the teams were forced off the field due to inclement weather.
Play resumed after a thirty-minute delay, and the Majors offense put together several good possessions in the Belhaven half of the field. In the 34
th minute the Blazer defense cracked as
Annakatharine Rowland snuck a ball through that found the foot of
Riley Fobare, she beat her defender and put the ball past the Blazer keeper for the goal.
After being outshot 8-2 in the first half, Millsaps did a much better job of controlling the ball and getting looks at goal in the second 45 minutes. Unfortunately all six of their second-half shots failed to find the back of the net. With the game still tied 1-1 after the full ninety minutes, the match moved into golden goal extra time.
Forbare fired off a shot on goal in the 97
th minute, but the Belhaven keeper was able to control it for a save. The Majors also got a shot on goal from
Hannah Johnson in the 108
th minute, but it to was saved. When the final horn sounded the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Defensively for Millsaps,
Alyssa McCarron played all 110 minutes in goal. She allowed just the one score and made nine saves.
