JACKSON, Miss.—Millsaps fought.
After dropping their SAA opener to BSC Wednesday night, in a match where the Majors were never really in it, it would have been easy for Millsaps to let Wednesday's match stay in their head and affect their play on Saturday. But they didn't. They fought. Ultimately, it was the Warriors who came out on top, 3-0, but the Majors have a lot to build on moving forward.
Hendrix came into the match with the best record in program history, but the Majors jumped on them early in game 1, pulling out to a 4-1 lead. After a small Hendrix tied the game, the two teams traded points back and forth until a 5-0 run gave the Warriors a 14-8 lead. Millsaps would get within 2, at 13-15 thank to an error and a
McKenzi Petricko kill, but Hendrix put it away with 3 straight points to end the set 25-17 and take game 1.
Game two started out much the same with Millsaps pulling ahead 5-2 but a 10-3 Hendrix run eventually gave them a 19-14 lead. An error and an
Alyssa Jolly ace brought the Majors within 3 but could only muster 1 more point as Hendrix took game 2, 25-17.
A Petricko kill, a kill from
Emily Herring, an ace by
Payton Passantino and a couple Warrior errors put Millsaps ahead in game 3. But out of a timeout, Hendrix went on a run of their own, 9-2, to take the lead in game 3. After a bit of back and forth, the Majors tied the game at 13, 16 and 17, but the Warriors closed the match on an 8-0 stretch to finish off Millsaps 25-17 and send the Majors to an 0-2 start in the SAA.
Millsaps was led offensively by Petricko with 10 kills while
Erica Bennett added 6.
Gracie Bellnap had 15 assists and Passantino contributed 13 digs.
