JACKSON, Miss. – Nine new members of the Millsaps College Athletics Hall of Fame have been announced. The Class of 2018 includes: David Chancellor '90 (Basketball), Jillian Compton '05 (Basketball), Carly Dessauer '05 (Cross Country), Chuck Edwards '95 (Football), Eric Hanbury '94 (Baseball), Juan Joseph '09 (Football), Stuart Phillips '04 (Baseball), Ryan Skertich '05 (Baseball) and the 2007-2008 men's basketball team.
The eight individuals and one team will be inducted in ceremonies that will take place during the Homecoming weekend festivities on Friday, October 12
th.
David Chancellor '90
Chancellor was a men's basketball player at Millsaps from 1986-1990. He finished his career as a member of the Majors 1,000-point club (1,164) and grabbed 455 rebounds. He had a career average of 12.5 ppg in his 93 total games for the Majors.
Jillian Compton '05
Compton was a member of the women's basketball team at Millsaps from 2001-05. During her career, she etched her name in the Majors history books in multiple categories, including points (9
th-1232), field goals made (8
th- 438), scoring average (6
th-12.7 ppg) and more. She is the record holder for three pointers made (177) and three pointers attempted (509) during her career. Compton was also an All-SCAC Honorable Mention in 2002, 2003 and 2004 as well as an SCAC Academic All-Conference performer.
Carly Dessauer '05
Carly Dessauer is the most decorated women's cross country runner to come through Millsaps College. During her senior season, she earned First-Team All-SCAC honors with an 11
thplace finish at the SCAC Championships. She led the Majors to a 13
thplace finish at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Championship meet and set a Millsaps College record in the process. She is the only Majors runner to be named to the All-Regional team, having done so in both the 2004 and 2005 season.
Chuck Edwards '95
One of the most prolific tacklers and pass defenders in Millsaps College history, Edwards finished his playing career ranked third all-time in with 15 career interceptions. His 198 solo tackles and 318 total tackles are both still top-five all time in Majors' history. He earned First-Team All-SCAC honors in both the 1994 and 1995 seasons.
Eric Hanbury '94
Hanbury was an infielder for Millsaps from '92 to '94, comfortable at either second base or shortstop. In his three years on the Majors baseball team, he was a SCAC All-Conference selection three times. His patience at the plate paid off, as he led the SCAC in walks (32) during the 1993 season. His ability to get on base benefited the team in '94 as he led the SCAC in runs scored with 44. He was also named the SCAC Player of the Week twice during his Majors tenure, once for the week of March 10-23 in 1992 and for the week of March 7-20 in 1994.
Along with being a strong individual player, he was also part of strong Millsaps teams that won three straight SCAC Championships. Hanbury was named the Gold Glove Award winner of the team in 1993 and the Best Offensive Player in 1994.
He graduated Cum Laude in 1994 with a degree in accounting.
Juan Joseph '09
During his playing career at Millsaps, Joseph played in 38 games for the Majors from '05 to '08, throwing for 9,295 yards (244.6 yards/game) and 87 touchdowns (2.3 touchdowns/game) with only 27 interceptions at a 63.4% completion percentage. He holds the single-game school record of six touchdown passes and also holds single-season records for passing yards, 3,463, and touchdowns, 32. He still claims the Millsaps and SCAC record of 149 straight completions and his 9,832 yards of total offense also stand as a school and conference record. Joseph led a resurgence in the Majors program, leading the team to consecutive SCAC titles, including the best season in program history his senior year in 2008 at 11-1. He was the recipient of the Conerly Trophy, given annually to the best player in the state of Mississippi. Joseph earned his degree in Business in 2009 and an M.B.A degree from the Else School of Management at Millsaps in 2011.
Each year a member of the Millsaps College football team is honored with the Juan Joseph Memorial Award. Started in 2016 in memory of Juan Joseph '09, a former Millsaps College standout quarterback, father, husband, coach, and mentor; the award provides recognition and honor to the most outstanding returning football student-athlete that exemplifies the altruistic spirit on and off the field that Joseph exhibited in his life.
Stuart Phillips '04
Phillips was a centerfielder for the Majors from 2001-04, winning top male student athlete during his senior season. He was named All-SCAC all four years at Millsaps and was a letter winner each year as well. His 228 career hits rank in the top 5 in Majors history while his 26 stolen bases in 2003 is still tops in the Millsaps record book. He was also member of the All-SCAC Academic team twice during his career.
Ryan Skertich '05
Skertich played outfield for the Majors from 2002-2005. Ryan was a prolific five-tool player. He hit for power and average, played exceptional defense and was a constant threat on the base paths. He was named First Team All-SCAC in 2004 and 2005, and was an All-South Region First Team player those same years. He holds the distinction as the first Millsaps baseball player to be named All-South Region more than once.
He was one of two players to be a unanimous selection to the SCAC All-Tournament Team in 2005. He also was part of the Central Regional All-Tournament Team in 2003.
He finished his career with 13 triples, including nine in one season which is still the Millsaps record. He hit 16 career homeruns, 28 career doubles, had 139 career RBIs and stole 52 bases in his time as a Major. He is the Millsaps record holder with 133 consecutive starts. His 2005 season was one that is still a part of the Majors' record books. His 60 RBIs, 9 triples, 121 total bases and 67 hits are all tops on the single season charts.
2007-2008 Men's Basketball Team
The 2007-08 men's basketball team finished the season as the most decorated in school history with a 28-4 overall record. They were undefeated in the Hangar Dome, posting a 19-0 record at home. The SCAC West Division champions went on to capture the SCAC tournament championship.
In the NCAA Tournament, the Majors won three games, advancing all the way to the Elite Eight where they lost to the eventual national champions. In the postseason poll Millsaps finished #6 in all of NCAA Division III.
The team was led by Edrick Montgomery, who earned the SCAC Tournament MVP, First-Team All-SCAC, First-Team All-Region and Second-Team All-American honors. Lorenzo Bailey was named Second-Team All-SCAC and Third-Team All-Region. Rodney Rogan earned Third-Team All-SCAC recognition.
