MOUNT BERRY, Ga.—To beat Berry, Millsaps was going to have to knock the Vikings off their game and play a near perfect match. Unfortunately, while the Majors limited their mistakes, it wasn't enough as Millsaps remained winless in SAA play with an 0-3 loss on Saturday.
In the first set, Berry's firepower was too much for Millsaps. After the Majors went ahead 2-1, Berry used runs of 7-2 and 7-1 run to re-take the lead. Millsaps mounted a small comeback and was able to pull within 6, at 13-19 but Berry scored 6 of the final 7 points to take set 1, 25-14.
The second set was more competitive with Millsaps jumping out early 6-2, thanks in part to a pair of kills from
McKenzi Petricko and kills from
Morgan Vincent and
Emily Herring. The two teams traded points back and forth, with neither being able to pull ahead by more than a point until the end of the set. With Berry serving for a 2-0 lead, a kill from
Carly Trimarche brought the game within 1 at 23-24, but the Vikings used a kill from Emily Hancock to win the game, 25-23.
The third set started out much like the second, with Millsaps pulling ahead early. But with the Majors leading 11-7, Berry used a 7-0 run to pull ahead 14-11. The teams traded points back and forth and a Petricko kill brought the score to 17-20. But the Vikings reeled off the next 5 points to take the game and the match, keeping the Majors winless in SAA play.
Offensively, Millsaps was led by Petricko with 13 kills, followed by Vincent with 7 and
Noelle Coats with 6. Herring and
Cailey Ness led the defense with 4 and 3 blocks, respectively, while
Payton Passantino had 17 digs.
