Liles Named Semifinalist for William V. Campbell Trophy

JACKSON, Miss.—Every year, the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame awards student-athletes who have shown exemplary performance on the football field, in the classroom and in the community.

The William V. Campbell Trophy is given to the top football scholar-athletes in the nation among the FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III and NAIA levels. Millsaps senior linebacker, Steele Liles, has been named one of the semifinalists for the 2018 awards. 
 
Each college in the US gets to nominate one football player that meets the criteria set forth by the committee. The student-athlete must be in the final year of football eligibility, have a 3.2 GPA or higher, be a strong performer on the football field and be a proven leader and citizen in the community. 
 
Liles, who is a senior at Millsaps, has played in three of four games for the undefeated Majors. He has 16 tackles, including one tackle for loss. In the classroom, Liles currently has a 3.67 GPA as a biochemistry major. He on the pre-med track and already has experience in the medical field by shadowing and observing Dr. Austin Barrett in orthopedic surgeries and working with Dr. Saeed Bajestani at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He already took his MCAT test, scoring in the top 84th percentile, nationally. 
 
After the announcement of the Campbell Trophy semifinalists, the list will be narrowed down to 12-14 finalists, who will be announced on Oct. 31. Each finalist will get an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship and will travel to New York for a ceremony and dinner on Dec. 4. Their accomplishments will be highlighted before a final winner will be chosen from the group of finalists. The winner will have his scholarship raised to $25,000.
