JACKSON, Miss.—Everything started out right for Millsaps in their volleyball match against Sewanee on Saturday. And then, just as quickly, everything went wrong.
The Majors, who were coming off their first SAA win of the season last weekend over Oglethorpe, took the first set from the visiting Tigers before dropping the next 3 in a 1-3 loss on Family Weekend.
Millsaps and Sewanee were evenly matched throughout the first set, with neither team being able to pull ahead. A late 3-0 run, highlighted by a
McKenzi Petricko kill, gave the Majors a 20-18 lead and forced a Sewanee timeout.
Out of the timeout, a kill from
Noelle Coats gave the Majors a 3 point lead but the Tigers tied it at 21 thanks to a pair of kills and a Majors error. Down 23-22, Millsaps kept their cool and took 3 of the next 4 points to win the set 26-24.
In the second set, after a back-and-forth start, the Majors were able to pull ahead 22-17 after a pair of aces from
Kayleigh Aicklen were sandwiched between kills by
Emily Herring and Petricko. But Millsaps would score just 2 more points in the set as the Tigers stormed back and took the game 26-24.
The third set started out well from the Majors as they used a 4-0 run to take a 7-4 lead. But Sewanee answered with a 13-2 run of their own to take all the wind out of the Majors' sails and eventually take the set 25-15.
For the majority of the fourth set, it looked like Millsaps would force a fifth game. For every point Sewanee scored, it seemed like Millsaps had an answer. It took a 3-0 Sewanee to give them the lead but even then, the Majors answered and tied the match at 22 apiece. But that's as close as it would get as a Tiger kill and two Millsaps service errors gave Sewanee the win and sent the Majors to 1-5 in the SAA.
Millsaps was led by Petricko with 14 kills and
Morgan Vincent with 13, along with her 4 blocks.
Gracie Bellnap chipped in 18 assists while
Payton Passantino added 21 digs.
What's Next?
