JACKSON, Miss.—Day two of the Millsaps/Belhaven Invitational looked much like day one: Millsaps coming out on the winning end by a large margin.
A day after not dropping a single set while picking up a pair of 3-0 wins, the Majors picked right back up where they left off, albeit without the perfection, for another pair of victories, this time 3-1 over Dillard and 3-0 over Tougaloo.
Match One
It seemed like every time Dillard pulled ahead, Millsaps would answer.
The Bleu Devils, who were looking to pick up their first win of the tournament, came out fast in the first set, eventually leading 17-13 midway through. The Majors were able to answer, taking advantage of three Dillard errors and a
Morgan Vincent kill. The two teams traded points to 23-all, but a pair of Major errors sandwiched a DU kill to give the Bleu Devils a 25-23 first set win.
The two teams came out evenly matched in the second set until Millsaps blew the game wide open. With the Majors ahead 10-8, they used an 11-2 run to pull ahead for good and win the set, 25-13.
The third set started out the way the second ended as kills by
Noelle Coats, Alyssa Jolly and
McKenzi Petricko put the Majors ahead 4-1. Dillard would battle back, eventually tying the set at 7, but an 8-2 run put Millsaps ahead for good as they took the third 25-18.
The Majors trailed early in set four, falling behind 6-5. But much like their other matches, Millsaps went on set-changing runs of 7-1 and 7-2 to close out the match and pick up the win.
Petricko led all players with 15 kills followed by
Erica Bennett with 12. Coats and
Emily Herring added 3 blocks apiece while
Katelyn Thomas finished with 24 assists.
Match Two
To end the two-day Millsaps/Belhaven Invitational, the Majors clashed with cross-town foe Tougaloo College. The Bulldogs had dropped their last two matches and came in against Millsaps looking for an upset.
Unfortunately for them, the Majors weren't about to let that happen as they put on a dominating performance against Tougaloo, shutting out the Bulldogs 3-0.
The upset-minded Bulldogs came out hard in the first set, using a 6-1 run to pull ahead 8-6 and force a Millsaps timeout. Tougaloo continued to hold a lead, pulling ahead 14-12 midway through. But that's when Millsaps went on their first big run of the match. A pair of kills by Petricko, a kill from Coats and a pair of aces by
Carly Trimarche put Millsaps ahead for good.
Millsaps came out firing on all cylinders for sets two and three. The Majors scored at least 2 straight points for all but 7 of their total 50 points between the two sets, including a 7-0 run to start the third. They finished out the weekend with big set victories, 25-9 and 25-12, to send them on a four-match winning streak.
Petricko and Bennett each had 8 kills for the match while
Payton Passantino finished the day with 17 digs.
STAT OF THE GAME…The Majors committed just 1 error in the final two sets, adding 27 kills in the process.
THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN…After only beating the Bulldogs by 6 points in the first set, the Majors were leaving nothing to chance, outscoring Tougaloo 50-21 to finish the match.
