JACKSON, Miss.—It's hard to believe, but the Millsaps women's basketball team just finished the halfway point of their SAA season.
The Majors were able to run their home win streak to 10, keeping them undefeated in the Hangar Dome this season, with a 68-55 win over the visiting Tigers of Sewanee. The win sends Millsaps to 15-3 overall and 6-1 in the conference.
How It Happened
Size definitely played a factor in the game as Sewanee chose to go with a smaller lineup against the Majors. It worked to start the game as they used their mid-range shooting to pull out to a 4-1 lead. Millsaps was able to pull ahead on a
Braxton Thomas layup and a
Millicent Butler jumper gave the Majors a small lead. The two teams traded baskets until a pair of
Morgan McCrea FT's and a
Dia Fortenberry free throw put Millsaps ahead, ultimately for good.
McCrea started the second quarter with a three and a
Rebecca Harris layup gave Millsaps an eight point cushion. In total, the Majors outscored Sewanee 17-8 to take a 29-18 lead into the half.
Taelor Manning started the scoring in the third quarter, knocking down a three to push the lead to 14. The Majors were able to build an 18-point advantage after back-to-back layups from
Anna Wilson and a Manning jumper at the end of the quarter gave Millsaps a 52-35 lead after three.
Back-to-back McCrea threes sandwiched a Sewanee and pushed the Majors lead to 20 to start the fourth. With two minutes left in the game, the Tigers were able to use their three point shooting to pull the game within 10, but the Majors iced it, hitting three free throws down the stretch.
The Majors were led by Manning's 17-point, 14-rebound double-double, along with McCrea's 18 points to lead all scorers. Wilson finished the game with 10 points and eight rebounds while Butler had a season-high 11 assists.
Stat of the Game
-Millsaps outscored Sewanee 38-16 in the paint and 12-3 in fast break points.
