Majors Defense Clamps Down in Win

DANVILLE, Ky.—It was a script flipping kind of night for the Millsaps defense.

The Majors faced off with Centre, whose defense was tops in the SAA allowing just 51 points/game. But it was the Millsaps defense that balled out Friday, holding the Colonels to single digits in three of the four quarters en route to a 56-37 road win.

How It Happened

It looked like Friday's game was going to be a mirror image of last week's defensive battle, as neither team could get anything going in the first quarter. The teams traded baskets until a Braxton Thomas jumper and a Morgan McCrea layup gave Millsaps their first lead at 6-5. Centre would pull back out in front but a pair of Dia Fortenberry free throws would give Millsaps a 10-8 lead after one.

A Centre technical to start the second quarter helped ignite an 8-0 Majors run McCrea knocked down a free throw, Kasi Matthews laid one in off the technical possession, McCrea hit a three and Fortenberry scored with a layup. Millsaps was able to build their lead to 10, but a small Colonel run brought the lead down to seven until Gabrielle Moore hit a three at the buzzer to send the Majors to a 30-20 halftime lead.

The Majors were able to keep Centre's offense struggling throughout the third until the Colonels pulled within nine with just under two minutes left in the quarter. But Taelor Manning answered with a three to extend the lead with 1:29 and Millsaps was able to keep Centre off the scoreboard for a 41-29 lead after three.

Fortenberry got the scoring started in the fourth with a layup down low, as the Colonels had no answer for her in the post. After a Centre basket, back-to-back threes by Millicent Butler and a McCrea three built the lead to 21. The two teams traded points at the end before the buzzer sent the Majors to their third straight win. With the win, Millsaps is 16-3 overall and 7-1 in the SAA.

Millsaps was led by Fortenberry's game-high 17 points and 9 rebounds, in just 18 minutes. Manning added 11 points and 8 rebounds.

Stats of the Game

-After being outrebounded by Centre 40-23 in the team's first matchup, Millsaps won the battle on the boards in the rematch, 43-26, including 13-8 on the offensive glass. The 13 offensive rebounds turned into 10 second-chance points.

-Millsaps held Centre to just 26% shooting from the field, including 2-16 (12.5%) from three.

What's Next

Millsaps will continue their road trip with a Sunday rematch against Sewanee. The Majors and Tigers will tipoff from Sewanee, Tenn. at 1pm.
