Big Second Quarter Lifts Millsaps to Win

SEWANEE, Tenn.—When you're on top, you get every team's best game.

It was no different Sunday as the SAA leading Majors traveled to Sewanee to face the 8-11 Tigers. Millsaps used a 17-6 second quarter before absorbing some body blows to hang on and knock off Sewanee 68-59.

How It Happened

Both teams started out hot in the first quarter, trading baskets and not being able to pull ahead. Millicent Butler got the Majors on the board first, sandwiching a Sewanee basket between a layup and a three. Millsaps shot a blazing 70% from the field in the opening period, holding Sewanee to just 46%, but eight Majors turnovers kept the Tigers in the game and helped keep the game tied at 17 after one.

Millsaps started the second on a 6-0 run with a Dia Fortenberry jumper and back-to-back Braxton Thomas layups to put the Majors ahead. The Majors defense would do the rest, as they held the Tigers to just six points in the second on 19% shooting. Taelor Manning also had a big quarter, adding six points herself, to give the Majors a 34-23 halftime lead.

Both teams came out shooting after halftime and Sewanee was able to pull within nine before Manning hit a three to extend the lead to 12. Sewanee's Ellie Treanton single handedly brought the Tigers back, using three threes and a free throw to pull within two late in the quarter, but Millsaps responded with size as Amber Newell and Thomas had layups to push the lead to six, 49-43, after three.

Five points from Morgan McCrea and a pair of Fortenberry free throws opened the fourth, putting Millsaps back on top by 13. After each team hit some shots, a Butler three gave Millsaps their biggest lead of the game, 61-46, with 5:00 to play. Sewanee was able to pull within five at 64-59, but Fortenberry's ability to drive against a smaller Tiger lineup allowed her to get to the free throw line, where she hit four in a row to put the game away. The win sends Millsaps to 17-3 overall and 8-1 in the SAA.

The Majors were led by Fortenberry's 15 points and 8 rebounds and Butler's 15 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Manning also scored in double digits, adding 13 and 6 rebounds.
