SEWANEE, Tenn. -- On Sunday afternoon the Millsaps College men's basketball team closed out another Southern Athletic Association (SAA) road trip by traveling to Tennessee to take on the Sewanee Tigers.
The Majors held a lead in the early portion of the 1st half before the Tigers fought back. Sewanee led by as many as 13 points late, but they were forced to hold off a furious Millsaps comeback effort in order to capture the 62-59 win.
How It Happened
Millsaps grabbed the early lead on a jumper by
Zachary Tullos. After Sewanee answered with a three-pointer,
Michael Sullivan put Millsaps back on top with a bucket, and the Majors were able to hold a lead for the first 8 minutes of play.
The Tigers pulled ahead 10-8 on a three-pointer with 12:22 remaining in the 1st half, and they never trailed for the rest of the afternoon.
They led by as many as 11 in the opening period, but layup as time expired by
Joshua Miller made it a 36-27 Sewanee lead at halftime.
In the early parts of the 2nd half the two teams traded baskets. The Tigers were never able to stretch their lead out beyond 13 points, but the Majors struggled to get within striking distance.
That all changed with 5:20 left in the game when Millsaps went on a 12-1 run. It started with a layup by
Justin Van Pelt, and featured a three-pointer from Sullivan and 7 points from Tullos.
A final jumper from Tullos cut the Tigers' lead to 60-59 with 1:09 left to play. Unfortunately the Majors could not get a basket on the offensive end, and Sewanee closed out the 62-59 win with a pair of free throws in the final seconds.
Key Contributors
Sullivan led the Majors with 12 points, and Tullos joined him in double-figures with 10. Van Pelt led the way with 7 rebounds, while
