Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Falls on the Road at Berry

MOUNT BERRY, Ga.--It was a tail of two halves for the Millsaps women's basketball team against Berry Friday night.

In the first half, Millsaps was hot on the floor, shooting 50% from three and holding Berry to just 10-30 from the field. But after halftime, the tables turned, Berry got hot while the Majors fell cold and the Vikings knocked off Millsaps 56-53, sending the Majors to 17-4 overall and 8-2 in the SAA.

How It Happened

Millsaps jumped out to an early 10-2 lead after a Taelor Manning jumper, an Anna Wilson layup and threes from Morgan McCrea and Millicent Butler. The Vikings were able to pull within one until McCrea hit another three to give Millsaps a 13-9 lead after one.

Dia Fortenberry started the scoring in the second with a layup in the paint, drawing the foul and knocking down the free throw before she laid another shot in, capping a 5-0 run. The two teams traded baskets, throughout the quarter, with Braxton Thomas scoring the Majors final four points of the half and sending Millsaps to a 28-23 halftime lead.

Millsaps was able to build a 34--26 lead in the third before the Vikings went on a 12-3 run to end the quarter and put Berry ahead 38-37.

Berry started the fourth on a 6-1 run to extend their lead and was able to pull ahead by as many as eight late in the game. A Manning three, a McCrea jumper and a pair of Butler free throws brought Millsaps within 1 at 54-53 with :04 seconds left but the Majors weren't able to get off a final shot.

McCrea's 12 points led the Majors, who also saw Fortenberry (11), Thomas (10) and Manning (10) in double figures. Kasi Matthews finished with eight rebounds.

What's Next

Despite the loss, the Majors remain in first place in the SAA, holding the tiebreaker over Oglethorpe. The Majors and Stormy Petrels square off in Atlanta on Sunday in a battle for first place. Tipoff is scheduled for noon.
