JACKSON, Miss. -- On Saturday, the Millsaps College volleyball team picked up a much needed conference win over Centre College.
The Majors displayed resilience in the closing set to overcome six lead changes and win 3-0.
Millsaps picked up their fifth SAA win in dominant fashion, forcing Centre to fall to 3-9 in the conference..
How It Happened
After falling behind in the first set 2-5, Head Coach
Jaime Fisher was forced to call a timeout. The Majors defense regrouped as the seniors,
Morgan Vincent and
Payton Passantino, locked down the back row to give the Millsaps offense a chance to get rolling. McKenzie Petricko and company did just that, pushing their lead to four at 14-10. The opening set continued to trade runs until a Vincent kill led to four serves from Passantino to close it out 25-20.
An impressive day for the junior outside hitter,
Emily Herring, was sparked in the second set with a hitting percentage of .714 on 5 kills. This performance gave Millsaps a 15-10 lead, following back-to-back successful attacks. Defensively, the Majors stood tall on the net, picking up six blocks to shut down Centre 25-15 to go ahead 2-0.
The visiting Colonels jumped out to a 2-5 start again, but this time it would take two timeouts before the Majors could slow down the opponents momentum. Centre swung with precision, making it difficult for the home team to string points together, but
Erica Bennett, fueled by the home crowd, won three of the five points Millsaps needed to put the game away 3-0.
Notables
Vincent did a little bit of it all, recording 14 digs, 10 kills, six blocks and an ace in the three set victory. Additionally, Herring led the offense with 11 kills, while Passantino topped the defense with 16 digs.
