CONWAY, Ark. -- On Sunday, the Millsaps College volleyball team closed out conference play with a match against the Hendrix College Warriors.
The Majors kicked it into an extra gear after dropping two sets, pushing the match to a deciding fifth set where the Warriors were able to outlast the comeback to win 16-14.
Millsaps drops to 16-12 overall and 6-8 in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) after the 2-3 loss. Hendrix avoids the upset to improve to 16-6 overall. They are now 10-3 in the SAA.
How It Happened
Millsaps was able to match the Warriors' intensity, keeping the lead within reach despite only being able to maintain it at 5-4. Hendrix was able to win the opening set on six of the last seven serves.
The Warriors took an early 9-6 lead hoping to produce the same result in the second set, but the visiting Majors fought back to tie the game up six consecutive times, making the score 14-14. Hendrix put together a four point run and Millsaps responded with four of their own to even the score at 18. A timeout from HC ended the threat at 23-22, taking the 2-1 advantage on two of the final three points.
An improved offensive attack immersed in the third set to give the Majors their largest lead of the contest at 9-6. Millsaps coasted the remainder of the set behind the arm of
McKenzi Petricko and her five kills in the 25-15 win.
Another impressive start from the visiting team put the Warriors behind 6-12. The Majors used the lead to stay in front 25-17 in the fourth set, evening the score 2-2.
Hendrix fell behind in the fifth set, but took an 8-5 lead to put the pressure on Millsaps. Both teams refused to give up, knotting the score seven different times before the Warriors were able to edge out the Majors 16-14.
Notables
Petricko, the senior,
led the Majors with a total of 21 kills, while
Erica Bennett contributed 15.
Defensivley,
Payton Passantino topped Millsaps with 24 digs, with teammate
Hannah Mattke adding 13.
With a team-high seven blocks, middle hitter
Morgan Vincent surpassed the 250 career blocks mark at Millsaps College. Vincent also posted 22 digs and 10 kills in the five set battle.
What's Next?
Millsaps will finish the regular season off with a doubleheader against LeTourneau University and Loyola University on Saturday, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
