JACKSON, Miss. -- On Thursday night the Millsaps College men's basketball team opened up the home portion of the 2019-20 season by hosting the LeTourneau University Yellowjackets inside the Hangar Dome.
LeTourneau jumped out to an early seven point lead before the Majors battled back. Millsaps led 20-17 near the midway point of the first half. Unfortunately the Yellowjackets responded with a quick run to go up 21-20.
LeTourneau did not trail again for the remainder of the game. They led 51-38 at halftime, and outscored the Majors by 11 points in the second half to come away with the 90-66 win.
How It Happened
LeTourneau put in the first two baskets of the game before a layup from
Joshua Miller put Millsaps on the scoreboard. The Yellowjackets quickly pushed their lead out to 13-4 before the Majors caught fire from behind the three-point arc. Consecutive long-range baskets from
Buck Blanz and
Kaleb Jenkins made it a 13-10 game at the first media timeout.
The stoppage did not slow down Millsaps however, and a few minutes later a
She'Chem Grant three-pointer gave the Majors their first lead at 18-17 with 12:11 left in the opening half.
After a defensive stop,
Kalvin Spikes converted on a layup opportunity to give Millsaps, what would prove to be their largest lead of the game, at 20-17.
The Yellowjackets responded by outscoring the Majors 34-18 over the final ten minutes of the half to carry a 51-38 lead to halftime.
It took nearly four minutes for either team to score in the second half, unfortunately it was LeTourneau who capitalized first with five points to increase their lead to 56-38. They would lead by as many as 26 points before Millsaps made a comeback.
An 8-0 Major run, highlighted by a pair of buckets inside the paint from Spikes, cut the deficit to 77-64. Unfortunately that was as close as Millsaps would get down the stretch as the LeTourneau lead proved to be too much to overcome.
Notables
No player found their way into double-digits in the scoring column for Millsaps.
Newlon Gillihan,
Anthony Hughes, Grant and Jenkins each finished with nine points. Gillihan also led the team with nine rebounds. Hughes paced the Majors with three assists.
