JACKSON, Miss. -- The Millsaps College football team is preparing for their final game of the 2019 season. Saturday the Majors will travel to Birmingham-Southern for a matchup with the Panthers.
Last Time Out
Millsaps was at home on Saturday afternoon as they celebrated Senior Day with a SAA contest against Hendrix College.
The Majors led 7-6 at the close of the first quarter, but it was Hendrix who held a 13-7 lead at halftime.
Despite Millsaps getting on the board first in the second half, the Warriors were able to outscore the Majors 20-15 over the final 30 minutes to come away with the 33-22 win.
With the loss, the Majors enter this weekend at 5-4 overall. They are 3-4 in the SAA. A win will allow Millsaps to finish the year with the most wins in a season since 2013.
After turning in an incredible performance,
Mickale Massey was named the SAA Defensive Player of the Week.
The junior linebacker was all over the field coming up with big plays for the Majors. The Memphis, Tennessee native finished the afternoon with 16 total tackles. He had 4.5 tackles-for-loss and a pair of quarterback sacks.
Additionally, after recording his fourth multiple-sack game of the season, junior defensive lineman
Liam Vincifora was named to the D3Football.com Team of the Week.
Tomorrow: Birmingham-Southern College (6-3, 5-2 SAA), 1:00 p.m., Birmingham, Ala.
The Panthers enter Saturday's matchup off of a 20-10 loss to Trinity University. Prior to that loss, BSC had won four games in a row, all by at least 10 points.
Key Players for the Panthers
Junior running back Robert Shufford is the leader of the BSC offense. He is tops in the SAA in rushing yards per game (176.3), total rushing yards (1,587), yards per rush (8.9) and rushing touchdowns (14).
At quarterback, junior Trevor Oakes leads the way. He averages 186.4 passing yards per game and has thrown for nine touchdowns this year.
In the receiving department the touchdowns are spread fairly even as four different players are tied with a two touchdowns each. Senior Cole Marell is one of those, he also leads the team with 30 receptions and 485 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, junior linebacker Garrett Stevens leads the way with 57 total tackles this year. Meanwhile a pair of seniors, Cameron DeArman and Corey Robinson have each recorded five sacks.
The Panther secondary has totaled seven interceptions. Junior Wes Guilford has a team-high 13 passes broken up. He also has a pair of interceptions.
