Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Defense Shines in 69-58 Win over the Mississippi University for Women

JACKSON, Miss. -- On Sunday, the Millsaps College men's basketball team closed out their final invitational tournament by hosting an in-state foe in the Mississippi University for Women Owls.

It was a back and forth game for most of the evening, but in the end the Majors were able to pull away from the Owls for a 69-58 win.

The victory pushes Millsaps to 5-3 overall this year while The W falls to 2-5.

How It Happened
It was the Owls who came out of the gate playing well, and they actually led 10-5 at the first media timeout.

A few minutes later Kaleb Jenkins sank a three-pointer to tie the game up at 17-17. After MUW split a pair of free throws, Drew Burnett converted a three-pointer of his own to give Millsaps their first lead of the game.

The Owls continued to have an answer for the Majors, and reclaimed the lead in the final minute of the half. On the other end Burnett grabbed an offensive rebound and beat the first half buzzer with a jumper to tie the game at 26-26 heading into halftime.

The teams continued to trade baskets in the early portion of the second half, but Zachary Tullos converted on a layup to put Millsaps up 39-38 with 14:16 left to play. The Majors never trailed the rest of the way.

The defense locked down MUW in the later portion of the game, limiting the Owls to just 15 points over the final 10 minutes.

Millsaps took a double-digit lead on a pair of free throws from Jenkins, and actually led by as many as 14 points down the stretch before settling for a 69-58 win.

Notables
Jenkins led Millsaps with 15 points, including shooting 3-5 from beyond the three-point arc. Anthony Hughes and Saxton Becker each had 12 points to round out the double-digit scorers for the Majors.

Millsaps out-rebouned The W 44-40 which helped lead to a 14-4 advantage in second-chance points.

What's Next?
Millsaps will continue their long stretch of games at home by hosting Belhaven on Tuesday night. The Majors will look to complete the season-sweep of the Blazers when the game tips off at 8:00 p.m.
