ATLANTA, Ga.—After the first 30 minutes of Sunday's game, things weren't going so well for the Majors.
Oglethorpe had outscored Millsaps 19-7 to take a 44-36 lead, the Majors were in a shooting slump and had turned the ball over 20 times. But according to MLB hall of famer Yogi Berra, "It ain't over till it's over."
The Majors used a 20-10 fourth quarter to pull ahead and hang on to beat the Stormy Petrels, 56-54, to take sole possession of first place in the SAA with just three games to play.
How It Happened
Oglethorpe got on the board first with a layup before
Taelor Manning and
Dia Fortenberry gave Millsaps a 4-2 lead. After OU tied it at 4,
Morgan McCrea went on a 5-0 run with a pair of free throws and a three, to give Millsaps a 9-4 lead. OU was able to climb back in, getting as close as 12-10, but layups from
Kasi Matthews and
Anna Wilson gave Millsaps a 16-10 lead. A Stormy Petrel three cut the deficit to 16-13 but Matthews responded with another layup to give the Majors an 18-13 lead after one.
Threes from
Rebecca Harris and McCrea sandwiched an OU three to start the second. The two teams traded baskets for the next seven minutes until, with Millsaps leading 29-23 with a minute left, OU hit a jumper and kept Millsaps off the board, giving the Majors just a 29-25 halftime lead.
The third quarter couldn't have gone much worse for Millsaps. They shot just 17% from the floor, had nine turnovers and were outscored 19-7, as Oglethorpe took a 44-36 lead into the final frame.
Oglethorpe used a pair of free throws to build their lead to 10 to start the fourth but four straight free throws from
Millicent Butler and Wilson brought Millsaps within six at 46-40. OU extended the lead to nine before back-to-back fast break layups from Wilson and
Braxton Thomas pulled Millsaps within five, forcing an Oglethorpe timeout. Thomas came up with a block and a foul, hitting one one of the shots, then Fortenberry followed it up with layup off a Stormy Petrel miss. After McCrea hit a pair of free throws and made the score 50-49, she made the shot of the season with a three off a Butler assist, to give Millsaps a 52-50 lead. The Majors then went 4-6 from the charity stripe to finish the game, playing strong enough defense to not give OU a clean look from three to tie the game. The win puts Millsaps at 18-4 overall, 9-2 in the SAA and gives them a strong hold on first place in the conference.
McCrea led the Majors with 15 points on 4-6 shooting, including 3-5 from three. Wilson had 11 points and nine rebounds
Stat of the Game
-Millsaps held Oglethorpe to 25.4% shooting in the game including 2-17 from the field in the fourth quarter.
