Baseball Drops Sunday Afternoon Contest to Maryville

JACKSON, Miss. -- The Millsaps College baseball team closed out the opening weekend of the 2019 season on Sunday afternoon by welcoming the Fighting Scots of Maryville College to Twenty Field.

Aided by a five-run 2nd inning, the Majors jumped out to a 7-2 early lead. Unfortunately, the Scots settled in, both on the mound and in the batters box, and went on to score the final 15 runs of the ball game to pick up the 17-7 win.

How It Happened
The Scots plated a pair of runs on a RBI single in the top of the 1st, but the Majors responded in a big way over the next two innings

In the bottom of the 1st Brennan Ducote and Jimmy Fondren each had a RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.

After Conner Haynes pitched a scoreless top of the 2nd, the Millsaps offense picked up right where it left off.

Jackson Hailey drew a leadoff walk to get things started. A William Warner single and Jimmy Johnstone walk loaded the bases and set the stage for a big inning. Ducote singled to left field, scoring both Hailey and Warner to give the Majors a 4-2 lead. After a Fighting Scot pitching change, Johnstone was able to score on an errant pick off attempt and Ducote came home on a wild pitch. With the scoreboard showing 6-2 Fondren sent a pitch over the left field fence for his second home run of the season.

All told, the Majors scored 5 runs on 4 hits and 1 Maryville error in the inning to take the 7-2 lead after just 2 innings of play.

Unfortunately, the rest of the afternoon was tough sledding for Millsaps. The Fighting Scot pitchers were able to scatter 6 hits over the final 7 innings, and their offense erupted for 15 runs on 16 hits.

The loss drops the Majors to 1-1 on the young season. Maryville improves to 3-0.

Key Contributors
Fondren and Ducote each had 3 hits on the afternoon, while Ducote's 3 RBIs led the team. Both players are off to red-hot starts to this season as they have combined for 3 home runs and 9 RBIs in just 2 games.

What's Next?
The Majors are back in action on Tuesday evening when they host Centenary College. First pitch from Twenty Field is slated for 4:00pm.
