JACKSON, Miss.—Sunday was a day of celebration at the Hangar Dome.
Along with celebrating their five seniors, the Millsaps women's basketball team also got to cut down some nets and celebrate a conference championship. After falling to Rhodes in Memphis last month, the Majors responded with a 70-50 win to move to 20-4 overall and 11-2 in the SAA, as well as move their season home record to 12-0.
How It Happened
When these two teams met on Jan. 13, the Majors shot just 28% from the field while the Lynx shot a blistering 55%. In a reversal of fortune, it was Rhodes that was held to just 28% shooting on Sunday while Millsaps knocked down 42% of its shots, including 8-16 in the first half.
The two teams traded baskets back and forth to start the game, tying the score at six and eight before
Rebecca Harris started a 5-0 run with a layup and-one, followed by a
Braxton Thomas layup, to give the Majors a 13-8 lead. Made shots went back and forth for the rest of the period until a Rhodes three cut the Majors lead to just two, 21-19, at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was just as close as the first, with Millsaps clinging to a five to six point lead throughout. After Rhodes had cut the lead to four with 2:14 left in the half, Millsaps went on a 7-0 run, with
Dia Fortenberry picking up four points and
Millicent Butler knocking down a three. Rhodes answered with a three of their own at the buzzer once again and trailed by eight at the half.
The Majors were able to build their lead to as much as 13 midway through the third before the Lynx responded with an 11-0 run to pull within two at 43-41.
Kasi Matthews hit a three and Thomas knocked down a jumper to pull back ahead by seven entering the final frame.
The fourth quarter was all Millsaps, as they outscored the Lynx 22-9. After Rhodes scored the opening basket of the quarter, the Majors went on a 12-2 run to put the game away. Rhodes was never able to get closer than 15 as the Majors picked up their third straight win.
Morgan McCrea led Millsaps with 15 points while
Taelor Manning had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. All five seniors, Butler, Harris, Matthews, Thomas and
Amber Newell scored in the game.
