BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Saturday could have been what people in sports call a trap game.
The Majors, coming off a big home weekend that saw them clinch at least a share of the regular season SAA championship, as well as lock up the number one seed and hosting privileges for the SAA tournament, traveled to BSC on Saturday, a team they beat by 38 to start SAA play.
And while the Panthers did their best to play spoiler, it was Millsaps who picked up the 69-64 win, their 21
st of the season, en route to the outright SAA championship and a four-game win streak heading into next weekend's tournament.
How It Happened
BSC was hot to start the game, as they jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead after a layup and-one followed by a three.
Morgan McCrea pulled the Majors within one with a 5-0 run of her own before a pair of
Anna Wilson free throws put Millsaps ahead 7-6. BSC then used some timely three point shooting, they were 5-8 in the first quarter to retake a late 22-16 lead before
Braxton Thomas made it 22-18 with a jumper to end the first quarter.
Wilson made the score 22-20 with a jumper to start the second while McCrea knocked down her second three of the game to put Millsaps back on top, 23-22. Millsaps would build a five-point lead midway through the quarter before the Panthers went on a 5-0 run to tie the game at 27.
Kasi Matthews buried a three to put the Majors ahead 30-27 at the half.
The Majors were able to cool off the hot BSC shooters in the third, holding the Panthers to just nine points, including outscoring BSC 10-3 in the final five minutes of the quarter.
Millicent Butler's layup with nine seconds left gave Millsaps a nine-point lead heading to the final period.
In the fourth, both offenses exploded, combining for 52 points. Millsaps was able to build their lead to 16, thanks, in part, to seven points from McCrea to start the fourth. BSC responded, however, with a 13-2 run of their own to pull within five at 56-51. The two teams traded baskets for the next four minutes until the Panthers went on another small run with a minute left to bring Millsaps' lead down to two, 64-62. A
Dia Fortenberry layup made the lead four but BSC answered to keep it a two-point game.
Rebecca Harris iced the game, however, with a bucket and-one with :19 seconds left to secure the Majors win.
Millsaps was led by McCrea's game-high 20 points to go along with five rebounds. Butler and Thomas, playing in their final regular season games, added 12 apiece.
Stat of the Game
-The Majors bench outscored Birmingham-Southern's 25-15.
