Majors Advance to SAA Semifinals with Win Over Hendrix

JACKSON, Miss.—There were some jitters. But how can you blame them?

For the first time since the current seniors were freshman, the Majors are the top seed in the SAA Tournament after finishing the regular season 12-2. So when Millsaps tipped off this afternoon against eight-seeded Hendrix, nerves were definitely a factor.

But after a slow start, the Majors stepped on the gas and became the team opponents are used to seeing en route to a 69-55 win over the Warriors.

With the win, the Majors will move onto the semifinals where they'll take on Rhodes College, who was a 63-43 winner over BSC.

How It Happened

After the Warriors scored the game's opening points on a free throw, the Majors went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by baskets from Morgan McCrea, Millicent Butler and Braxton Thomas as well as a pair of Taelor Manning free throws. Hendrix narrowed the lead to four, but Millsaps used four free throws to take a 12-4 lead after one.

Hendrix started the second quarter on a 9-2 run to cut into the Majors lead, but a Butler basket and-one stopped the Warrior run and put Millsaps back up by four. The two teams traded points before a 13-0 Majors run, highlighted by four straight points from Dia Fortenberry and six straight from Butler, gave Millsaps a 32-14 lead. Hendrix ended the half on their own 5-0 run but Millsaps led 32-19 at the half.

The Warriors picked up in the third where they left off before halftime, starting on a 6-0 run before a Butler free throw and a Fortenberry basket put the lead back in double digits. The Majors lead fluctuated between 10 and 13 until four points from Fortenberry and a Thomas layup gave Millsaps a 50-32 lead going into the final frame.

The final quarter saw Hendrix outscore Millsaps 23-19, but by then, the game was already out of hand and the Majors were on their way to their 13th straight win at the Hangar Dome.

Millsaps was led by Butler's game-high 17 points on 5-7 shooting. Fortenberry added 14 points and nine rebounds while McCrea and Thomas had 12 and 11, respectively.

Stats of the Game

-The Majors turned 17 Warriors turnovers into 25 points.

-Millsaps outscored Hendrix 28-20 in the paint.
