MARSHALL, Texas -- The Millsaps College baseball team played their first true road game on Wednesday night. The Majors traveled to Texas to take on the Tigers of East Texas Baptist University in non-conference action.
The Tigers grabbed an early lead, but a furious Millsaps comeback tied the game going into the bottom of the 9th. Unfortunately ETBU was able to plate a run and secure the 8-7 win in walk off fashion.
How It Happened
It was all ETBU early on as the Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after just one inning of play. They added a run in the bottom of the 2nd before the Majors responded in a big way in their half of the 3rd.
Jimmy Johnstone hit a one-out single to get things started for Millsaps. After
Brennan Ducote reached on a error,
Jimmy Fondren smoked a double into right field scoring both Ducote and Johnstone to make it a 4-2 game. After an ETBU pitching change,
Mason Little singled up the middle to bring Fondren home and make it 4-3.
Unfortunately the Tigers scored 2 runs in the 4th, and added an insurance run in the 7th to carry a 7-3 lead into the top of the 9th.
It was there that the Milsaps offense, down to their last three outs, came alive again.
In the early portion of the inning
Chris Hart reached on a fielders choice. After stealing second base, he was brought home on an
Avery Brock single to make it 7-4. With two outs in the inning Johnstone singled and Ducote walked to load the bases. In the very next at bat Fondren came through with a bases clearing double to tie the game up at 7-7.
Unfortunately in the bottom of the 9th the Tigers quickly loaded the bases, and ended the game on a balk to escape with the 8-7 win.
Key Contributors
Fondren led the way with a pair of hits and 5 RBIs, and Johnstone also added 2 hits for Millsaps. All told the Majors matched the Tigers with 9 hits.
