JACKSON, Miss. -- The Millsaps College baseball team was back in town on Friday morning, albeit at a different location. The Majors hosted the Pioneers of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in a game that was moved to Smith-Wills Stadium due to the recent weather in the metro.
The Majors jumped out to a 4-0 lead on UWP, but the Pioneers were able to fight back and force extra innings. In the top of the 10th inning UWP scored 3 runs and held the Majors scoreless in their half to pick up the 7-4 win.
How It Happened
Barret Kaul got the call on the mound for the Majors, and turned in a quality start going 6 innings and allowing just 1 run on 2 hits. He also struck out 4 Pioneer batters.
After a pair of scoreless innings to start the game, the Millsaps offense broke through in the bottom of the 3rd.
Jackson Hailey led off the inning with a single to set the table. After an
Alan Merkle sacrifice bunt,
Chris Hart singled to put runners on the corners for the Majors. In the very next at bat
Jimmy Johnstone bunted for a single bringing home Hailey to make it 1-0 Millsaps.
After two more scoreless innings from Kaul, the Majors' offense went back to work in the bottom of the 5th.
Hailey and Merkle both singled and Hart reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Johnstone singled to score Hailey for his second RBI of the game and force a Platteville pitching change. One batter later
Jimmy Fondren was hit by a pitch, and
Keaton Page followed it up with a bases loaded walk to make it 4-0 at the end of 5 innings.
Unfortunately, the Pioneers responded with 1 run in the 6th and a three-spot in the 7th. Neither team could break through over the final 2 innings and the game went into extras.
In the top of the 10th UWP scored 3 runs on 3 hits and 2 Millsaps errors to go ahead 7-4.
The Majors were able to get a base runner in their half of the inning, but could not get any runs in as the Pioneer pitching was able to hold on for the 7-4 win.
Key Contributors
Hailey led the way with 3 hits on the day for Millsaps, while Johnstone's 2 RBIs were a team-high.
