After clinching the 2018-19 regular season SAA Championship, the Millsaps women's basketball team is set to host the other seven teams in the Hangar Dome this weekend.
The winner of the tournament will receive the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. Teams are chosen on Monday, Feb. 25 with the first-round games taking place on March 1. Millsaps will look to advance to the NCAA tournament for the first time in more than 20 years, their last trip coming in 1996.
The Majors will open the SAA Tournament against Hendrix. Millsaps comes into the tournament as the only team in the conference to have beaten all seven other teams at least once. They also come in with a 12-0 home record, the only SAA team unblemished at home this season.
If the Majors win, they'll play in Saturday's semifinals against the winner of the 4/5 matchup between Rhodes and BSC.
As a team, Millsaps finished the regular season first in the SAA averaging 63.7 points/game. Defensively, they ranked third, allowing just 54.8 points/game.
Morgan McCrea's hot finish to the season, where she scored in double-figures in five straight, was enough to move her into fifth in the SAA in scoring at 12.5 points/game while
Dia Fortenberry's 11.2 points/game put her at tenth in scoring. Senior point guard
Millicent Butler was the Majors leading assist giver, dishing out 3.0 assists/game.
Fortenberry's defense was a big factor for the Majors success, as she was tops in the SAA with 2.5 steals/game and tied for fifth in rebounding at 6.9/game.
Last Time Out
The Majors finished their 2018-19 season with a win on the road against Birmingham-Southern. The upset minded Panthers gave Millsaps their best shot, outscoring the Majors 28-24 in the fourth quarter, but
Rebecca Harris had a big basket and-one in the final seconds to give Millsaps a 69-64 win. McCrea led all scorers with 20 points while Butler and
Braxton Thomas had 12 apiece.
Friday

Not too many teams have had as rough a break this season as the Warriors. After a Jan. 20 loss to Oglethorpe that saw their SAA record fall to 2-5, the Warriors also lost their two star players for the rest of the season: SAA leading scorer Vinessa Daniel and the team's second leading scorer, Jayla King. Hendrix finished the season on an 11-game losing streak and dropped both games to the Majors this season by a combined score of 126-80.
Key Players for Hendrix
- Macy Moody-With Daniel and King both out, Moody is the leading scorer for the Warriors, contributing 8.5 points/game. She was held scoreless in Hendrix's final two games, including the Feb. 8 loss to Millsaps.
- Kessie Jenkins-Jenkins is the top rebounder for Hendrix, pulling down almost six a game while also being the team's second-leading scorer at 8.3 points/game.
