JACKSON, Miss. -- The Millsaps College baseball team returned to Smith-Wills Stadium on Saturday morning for another matchup with the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneers. Today's game was a complete opposite of yesterday's extra inning afair.
In this matchup the Majors grabbed an early lead, and never looked back en route to a 21-6 win in a game that was called after 7 innings.
How It Happened
Jimmy Fondren got the start on the mound for the Majors, and after pitching a scoreless first frame he kicked off the scoring for the Millsaps offense.
In the bottom of the 1st,
Jimmy Johnstone reached on a hit by pitch. He advanced to second on an errant pick off attempt, and scored the game's opening run on a Fondren double to LF.
After Fondren did not allow a run in the top of the 2nd, the Majors really broke the game open in their half of the inning.
Jackson Hailey started things off with a one-out single. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, and later in the inning
Keaton Page singled to make it two runners on, but two outs in the inning.
In the very next at bat Johnstone swung at strike three, but the ball got away from the UWP catcher allowing Hailey to score and Johnstone to reach second.
Brennan Ducote was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Fondren drew a bases loaded walk to make it 2-0.
The Pioneers went to the bullpen for a pitching change, but it had little affect on the Majors.
Mason Little was the first batter to face the new pitcher and he sent a ball over the left field wall for a grand slam.
All told, Millsaps led Platteville 7-0 after just 2 full innings of play. The Majors were not done there however, as they pushed their out to 9-0 in the 3rd when Fondren hit his team-leading third home run of the year.
The Pioneers broke through for 3 runs on 3 hits and 1 error in the 4th to make it 9-3, but Millsaps was not going to let up.
They added another five runs in a bottom of the 5th inning that was highlighted by another Cooper double and a Hailey 2-RBI single.
UWP put up another three-spot in the 6th, but the Majors ended all chances of a comeback over the next two innings.
The bottom of the 6th was highlighted by a Ducote solo shot. And the 7th inning saw Millsaps score 5 more runs on 4 hits and a UWP error to cap things off at 21-6.
Key Contributors
Little finished tied with a team-high 2 hits and led the way with 5 RBIs, including the grand slam. Meanwhile, Fondren, Cooper, Hailey and Ducote all had multiple hits and RBIs for the Majors.
On the mound Fondren went 5.1 innings and struck out 7 batters on his way to his first win of the season.
