JACKSON, Miss. -- The Millsaps College men's basketball team returned home on Friday night after spending the last couple of weekends away from the friendly confines of the Hangar Dome.
The hometown crowd did the Majors well as they were able to pick up their third Southern Athletic Association (SAA) win by a score of 52-41 over Hendrix College.
The win pushes the Majors to 11-12 overall on the year and 3-9 in league play. Hendrix drops to 9-14 overall and 5-7 in the SAA.
How It Happened
Millsaps got things going early on by jumping out to a 9-3 lead less than 4 minutes into the game. The first 7 of those points came from
James Turner who was dialed in at the start. A few possesions later the Majors took their largest lead of the first half when a
Newlon Gillihan layup put them up 15-6 with 11:34 left to play in the period.
The two teams went back forth as Hendrix stayed within striking distance. The Warriors closed the half on an 8-2 run to make it a 22-19 Millsaps lead at the halftime break.
Coming out of the locker room it was slow going for both teams. At the 12:57 mark Hendrix tied the game at 25-25 on a pair of free throws.
The Majors responded quickly however, as they never trailed.
Matt Owens made good on two free throws on the other end, and less than 3 minutes later Millsaps went up 35-25 on a
Ryan McLaurin three-pointer.
That quick 10-0 run really swung the momentum in the Majors favor, and the Warriors never recovered. Millsaps ended the game making 6 of their last 7 free throw attempts which aided them in putting the finishing touches on the 52-41 win.
Key Contributors
Justin Van Pelt led Millsaps with 12 points and he pulled down 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double.
Cameron Carvelli joined Van Pelt in double-digits with 10.
