JACKSON, Miss. -- Saturday was Opening Day at Twenty Field for the 2019 version of the Millsaps College Majors. The Majors welcomed the Yellow Jackets of LeTourneau University to Jackson.
LeTourneau scored first, but it was Millsaps who dominated the middle innings in order to come away with the 8-4 win.
How It Happened
The Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard first thanks to a RBI double in the top of the 1st inning. Their early lead would not last for long however.
In the bottom of the 2nd inning
Jimmy Fondren sent the second pitch he saw over the left field fence for a home run to tie things at 1-1. After
Barret Kaul pitched a scoreless top half of the 3rd inning, the Millsaps offense went right back to work in the bottom half.
Late in the inning
Jimmy Johnstone reached on a fielder's choice which brought
Brennan Ducote to the plate. Ducote unloaded on the first pitch of the at bat, which also went over the left field wall, for a two-run home run.
At the end of 3 full innings the Majors led 3-1.
In the 5th Millsaps pushed across an insurance run when
William Warner scored on a throwing error by the LeTourneau catcher.
The Yellow Jackets fought back to make things interesting as they hit solo home runs in both the 6th and 7th innings to cut the Majors' lead down to 4-3, but their momentum was quickly halted in the bottom of the 7th. Millsaps sent 9 batters to the plate in the inning, and 4 of them scored.
Fondren was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded which allowed
Alan Merkle to score. After a pitching change,
Mason Little singled through the right side of the infield scoring Warner. In the very next at bat
Keaton Page hit a sacrifice fly to CF bringing home Ducote, and
Christian Cooper finished things off bringing home Fondren on a 2-out RBI single.
All told, the scoreboard showed Millsaps leading 8-3 after 7 complete innings.
LETU plated an unearned run in the top of the 9th, but it was too little too late as
Hayden Williams induced a fly out to end the game and secure the first win of the season.
Key Contributors
Warner finished the day with a team-high 4 hits, and he also scored 2 runs. Fondren and Ducote each had 2 RBIs to go along with their home runs.
On the mound, Kaul went 5 full innings allowing just 5 hits and 1 earned run to pick up the win.
Langston Haden pitched 2 clean innings of relief before Williams finished the game out in the 9th.
