Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women's Tennis Cruises to a Pair of Season-Opening Wins

CONWAY, Ark. -- The Millsaps College women's tennis team opened up their 2019 season with a pair of road matches on Saturday. 

The Majors wasted no time in jumping into Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play as they beat Hendrix College 9-0 to open up the season.

Later in the day Millsaps picked up a 9-0 win over the University of the Ozarks to improve their record to 2-0 on the young season. 

Hendrix College
The doubles team of Grace Gaskins and Maggie Dabadie got things going right from the start for Millsaps with an 8-2 win. Jillian Sandoz and Morgan Jenkins scored an 8-1 win at the No. 2 doubles spot, while the combination of Morris Kelly Clayton and Ella Shields closed out doubles play with an 8-2 win to give the Majors an early 3-0 advantage.

As the match shifted into singles play Millsaps did not lose their momentum. 

Dabadie picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2, and Gaskins took an easy 6-0. 6-0 win at No. 1 to clinch the match for the Majors. 

Singles wins by Shields (6-2, 6-1), Clayton (6-1, 6-0), Marissa Brown (6-1, 6-1) and Jordyn Kanak (7-5, 6-2) sealed the shutout victory for Millsaps.

University of the Ozarks
In the second match of the day Millsaps took on the Eagles of the University of the Ozarks. In a near carbon-copy of the earlier match, the Majors were able to easily come away with the win. 

Again it was doubles play that give Millsaps the quick advantage. Clayton and Shields started it out with an 8-3 win. Sarah Hayek and Brown followed it up with an identical 8-3 win at No. 2, and Sandoz and Jenkins closed things out with an 8-4 victory to make it 3-0 Majors early on. 

In singles play Kanak picked up her second win of the day, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot, and Jenkins followed it up with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 to clinch the win. 

Sandoz took singles No. 3 by a score of 6-0, 6-1. Brown scored another 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4, and Clayton picked up her fourth win of the day, 6-1, 6-0 at singles No. 5. 

Hayek finished off the shutout win for the Majors by taking the No. 6 spot 6-3, 6-2.

What's Next?
The Majors will open up the home portion of their schedule next weekend when they host Huntingdon College on February 16th. Matches from Coach Montgomery Courts are slated to begin at 2:00pm.
