JACKSON, Miss. -- After playing 11 non-conference games already, the Millsaps College baseball team is a quarter of the way through their 2019 season. This weekend the Majors will shift their focus however, as they turn their attention to opening up Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play at home with a three-game series against the Colonels of Centre College.
Check out the game notes below for all of the details on this weekend's series.
Last Week
Millsaps dropped a pair of games to Centenary College and No. 22 Huntingdon College earlier this week.
On Sunday, the Majors wrapped up a weekend of games at Smith-Wills Stadium against the Gents of Centenary. The Gents used a three-run third inning and a five-run seventh to break the game open and capture the 11-1 win.
On Tuesday evening Millsaps returned to Twenty Field for a match up with the No. 22 Hawks of Huntingdon. The Majors grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 1st, and were able to hold that advantage until the later innings. In the 7th inning the Hawks plated a pair of unearned runs to pull ahead 2-1, and they held on for the win.
Millsaps enters SAA play this weekend with a 2-9 overall record.
Saturday, March 2nd 12:00 p.m. (DH) & Sunday, March 3rd 12:00 p.m. vs Centre College (6-1, 0-0 SAA)
The Colonels of Centre College will be the first SAA opponent for the Majors this season. Last year these two teams played a three-game series in Conway, Arkansas on the campus of Hendrix College. Behind a 21-run output in the rubber game the Majors took the series 2-1. Millsaps is 6-4 in their last 10 match ups with Centre.
This year the Colonels are off to a 6-1 start, after dropping a 5-2 game to Berea back on February 16th, they have won their last 5 games in a row.
Centre enters the weekend near the bottom of the SAA in most offensive categories, but their pitching staff has a combined ERA of 2.39 and an opponent's batting average of .218. Both of those numbers are second-best in the league.
Senior Drew Schacht leads the Colonels offense with a .296 batting average, while senior Cameron Duggins is leading run producer with 7 RBIs so far.
On the mound, senior Sam Shelley is off to a 2-0 start and has yet to surrender an earned run in his 11.2 innings of work. Another senior, Nick Hoffman leads the team with 17 strikeouts in 10 innings pitched, he also has picked up a win for the Colonels.
Offensively, the Majors will look to guys like
Jimmy Fondren, who leads the SAA in RBIs with 14, and
Brennan Ducote, who is second on the team with a pair of home runs, to provide an offensive spark this weekend.
In terms of pitching, both
Barret Kaul and
Conner Haynes are off to good starts on the mound, and they will look to continue that success against the Colonels on the opening weekend of conference play.
